Mint To Release "Baseball" Hall of Fame Coin

As was brought up back in Aug. of 2012 by member bidask here, the San Francisco Mint
will be making these commemoratives: story

I personally find nothing attractive in this coin's design...others will, no doubt.
Everything starts and everything stops at precisely the right time for precisely the right reason.

I will probably buy a three piece set if the mint offers one because of the subject matter and my desire to keep my gold commemorative coin set complete. I too don't care for the concave/convex coins. It is nothing but a gimmick, and I hope that this will be the first last of them.

The more I think about it - and read - the more I consider it 'gimmickry' .... I also believe the mint should not be gathering funds for a private institution. Cheers, RickO

    What's next?

Coins shaped like Footballs? Basket Balls (most likely)?

Golf Balls? (I think Scotland would wholeheartedly object)?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Actually it might have something more to do with the pocket in a baseball glove, but I could wrong on that one. If these coins had been issued before the 1950s they still would have flat.

yeah, these coins suck. don't buy them. especially not the $5. who wants a gold coin that looks like a glove on one side and a baseball on the other...minted in san francisco? forget it. nobody wants that.

I too cast my vote with the nays. However, as an error coin enthusiast it will be interesting to see how many errrors may result from this particular design.

    Open the floodgates baby !

There are some really wierd shapes coming out from some mints. The one I remember is the Eiffle Tower shaped coin from some offshore
unknown mint. There are other strange coins coming from all over the globe. Must be a market.

Now the question is how soon will the US Mint come out with another oddly shaped " coin " ? Didn't I read about a Football shaped Coin
somewhere? How about a Dinner Plate sized/shaped Silver Coin to honor Julia Child? The well heeled could serve Dinner on their collection
of Julia Child Coins. Might just work !

PS- looked at the linked article, and I must confess I hated the design much less than I thought I would.

    Still, that ain't sayin' much.

You guys are hilarious. These are the most fun coins the Mint has put out in a LONG time. But yes, as steveben advises, please keep your credit cards in your wallets. Nothing to see here… Move on.

None unless the mint decides to manufacture some and let them "slip out" for the publicity and possible additional sales. The quality control on the commemorative coins has been pretty good over the years. Most of the time the only thing that is wrong with them is that they get marked up and then it's only a little.

I for one am going to really enjoy this series of Coins. I will not purchase a single one of them but I will enjoy
following the sales numbers and the overall marketing campaign. Sort of like how I enjoy following the Tigers
yet I've refused to attend any more games after the 2012 season.

I want to see how popular the Coins are with the general public. Will the TV hucksters buy in bulk and pitch them
as if in a free for all at a carnival clown dunking event? Will the public embrace them for a moment and then
discard them like a bunch of State Quarters?

For sure they'll be on all the MLB websites. They'll be in every MLB and Minor League Stadium gift shop. And of
course at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

It's going to be an exciting season.

Gold is extremely volatile now. Last I checked it was $1382 , many are calling for it to be at $1400 by around Monday or
soon after. If something happens in the Ukraine - look out - Gold will bust out big time.

US Mint is in a bad place for pricing new Gold product.
