What city is the "Coin Collecting Capital" or "Numismatic Capital of the US"
I live near Hartford, which is (or was) know as the "Insurance Capital"
So what is the "Coin Collecting Capital"? actually it is a no-brainer: Los Angeles (the area, including OC) - home to PCGS, Stacks/Bowers, Goldbergs, Long Beach shows, and many prominent dealers. The challenge is, what is number 2 through 5? Also, what would the "International Coin Capital" be? I have guesses based on my recollection of major auction events. Here is my shot at the top metro areas:
US Coin Collecting Capitals
1. Los Angeles
2. Dallas (for Juggernaut Heritage)
3. Florida (for FUN, NGC, and many prominent dealers)
4. Philadelphia (the Mother mint, and US mint products)
5. Chicago
6. New York
7. Baltimore
223. Cleveland
International Coin Collecting Capitals
1. London
2. Hong Kong
3. Germany
4. Paris
5. Shanghai?

Well, just Love coins, period.

<< <i>I would nominate Philadelphia as the "Coin Capital of the US"---home of the mother mint. If you asked about the "Coin Collecting Capital of the US", that would result in a different answer. >>
Without question.
Eliasberg, Garrett, and Newcomer collections.
Triannual national coin show.
What does LA have that puts it on the list? Long Beach and the Goldbergs? I would take Baltimore over LA.
Not that it's Coin related, or anything but it does look like a guy could drop off his eBay shipments here.

That would be my vote, with the runner up being Carson City.
<< <i>New York City used to be best when I lived in that area in the 1970s, but now I'd go with Baltimore because of the regular show with Florida second. >>
Baltimore is in a great location---easy drive on I-95 from NY to Richmond. Also, BWI airport in nearby. Also, downtown Baltimore has many amenities including some great restaurants. Whitman Publishing puts on a great show.

In terms of current commerce, I would submit Orange County, CA to the list of candidates. Among the biggest numismatic entities, you have:
1) PCGS
2) Stacks Bowers
3) Teletrade
4) Spectrum Numismatics
5) A-Mark
6) Great Collections
7) Numismedia
8) PNG (borders OC)
9) Long Beach Expo (borders OC)
10) Many other high-profile coin firms (won't name names to be fair and because I will forget a few)

As for the "coin capital" I call it Baltimore.
<< <i>I agree with Philadelphia being number one....no idea for Europe. Collected coins while I lived in Portugal, UK, etc....Saw a lot of coin dealers in Copenhagen..Cheers, RickO >>
Philadelphia has never been a good location for coin shows, however. When I lived in New Jersey and used to go the shows in New York City, I went to one Philadelphia. It just didn't work, and many of the dealers agreed. Whitman tried to run one there recently and had to give up.

I am considering Orange County is part of Los Angeles.
If you want, we can refer to PCGS as the "Los Angeles Coin Graders of Santa Ana"
