HOLY COW!! (First time buying on eBay) My blood is rushing haha. Grading opinions please.

So, I found this Isabella sold by someone here on these forums, decided I wanted it. I initially set my price at 325, but it quickly went up past that!!

So, I put in a bid at like 3 minutes out, and soon got beat, then I bit up, back and fourth like 8 times... Man, is this what it really feels like haha?????

AHHHHH!!!!

What do you guys think of her?????

If you know the grade from seeing the coin please don't spill that out, I'm curious what others here say about this one.

Nice Coin! Since it's your first time on the Bay...next time, don't do anything but click on "watch item" and then set a reminder on your smart phone for 3 min before auction ends... Then, when your phone lets you know it's time to tell everyone your with, "hey, I'll be right back...I have to use the restroom." Then, lock yourself somewhere safe and add a nuke bid and press submit and then watch the clock on the auction you are interested in tick down to about 3 or 4 seconds left and BAM SLAM BAM...press the "place bid" button and then go back to your normal life...because the coin is yours image

It's just nuts. Use a sniper. You'll save a lot of money, time and aggravation.

Yall have some good ideas. I don't use eBay enough (as you can tell haha) to even know how to setup a sniper or anything like that. I don't know how I feel about that either.

I always tell my buddies that I never bid on coins I really want. I always use a snipe program on coins I want. As Lance already stated, it will prevent you from overbidding. As Jack Lallanne once said... set it and forget it!

Based on the amounts you said you bid, along with the photos provided, I'll guess AU58.

    Pretty coin.

That's exactly why I guessed AU58! Who bids $325 for a pretty MS64+ Isabella and thinks that he has a chance? image

    Sweet looking piece. Congrats!

You only run into that if you bid 3 or more minutes out. Bid 5 seconds out and you'll be fine image

All good comments! I appreciate everyone's input. Maybe I'll check into a snipe program, but that would also take out the bidding high! It was pretty great image

And something must be going right because just now found these while roll hunting. I'm about to stop doing it, just two more boxes after this

The bidding "high" is what is going to make your wallet a lot lighter if you keep it up. Seriously nice coin, but just as seriously you need to use a sniper. It will save you a lot of pain later on. Gavelsnipe is a program run by Heritage and it can be used for eBay.

I was not aware that you could do this all online. I thought you had to download a program or something like that. I may just try that out... Thanks for passing that on

It looks really nice, I can't tell if it's 58 or 64! To avoid getting caught up in competitive bidding, I have used Gixen, a snipe service, that is cheap and easy to use. Plug in your max amount and go about your business. Good stuff on eBAy but it can be a minefield.

Thrive on the rush. Sweet coin, nice title, and excellent example of what we all go through when we STEP UP. Doesn't it feel like a slice of pure elation ?

Perhaps I am misunderstanding this, but I would think that if you use sniper service and are in an auction with one or more other people using such software, isn't the end result the same as though you had entered one maximum bid at the beginning?

Also, I know Gavelsnipe says "GavelSnipe can't bid on a PayPal security key enabled account" and I would expect that's true for all of them. I'm NOT going to disable two-factor login on any of my accounts.

(For those who don't know, two factor login is offered by many sites - Paypal, Gmail, and many more. In it's simplest form, it sends a text message to your phone when you try to login and you have to enter the code in that message to proceed. It means that someone has to know your login, password AND have your cell phone to access your account)

Exactly what I would have typed ... had I not read the thread.

Set your limit ... set your snipe ... set your butt at the computer ... set your blood pressure cuff ... set your eyes on the clock ... watch the auction end

    Regarding sniping programs ...

I was a loyal user of bidnip.com, until they changed their format, mucked up a couple of bids for "unique" items, and never responded to emails. So much for paying them to snipe for me.

Try gixen.com ... it's free and easy. No "bells and whistles" but a quiet snipe is still a nice snipe.

Putting in a max bid before the end of the auction allows underbidders to bid you up incrementally...you may have a nuke, unbeatable bid but there is every chance that someone will keep
plugging in bids, trying to see if they can find out where the top is....with all that action on a coin prior to the end of auction, other bidders may get interested as well and pretty soon it's off to the moon ! Great for the seller, not great for you...the buyer image

But again: if other folks are using snipers, doesn't that happen anyway? (Not arguing so much as trying to understand).

The real rush though is on the seller side. Imagine the elation experienced when a $2000 coin is $600 underwater with 8 seconds remaining and suddenly, magically, the price soars to $2400 and the day is saved!
  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭
When I used to buy on ebay (in the good old days), I loved to snipe manually....never lost an item I really wanted - I did sleep through a couple, but that is not losing the bid war. Best snipe was two seconds.... what a rush. Cheers, RickO

I have never used an auction sniper. If I want an item, I put in a protection bid, not a nuke bid. And towards the end I keep ebay on my iphone with a nuke bid loaded to snipe.

In all seriousness though, with 99% of ebay items being buy it now, I can't recall the last time I actually had to snipe something.

As for the Isabella, I am going to say Uncirculated details, cleaned and retoned.

I use an auction sniper because it saves time, and ensures that I don't miss any auctions that I intend to bid on.

    US Coins...................165,531 listed on eBay
    BIN's.........................135,180
    Auction Format...........34,596

Wow. I didn't realize it was that high. I'm weary of many BINs, such as those on US Mint patterns as mentioned in another thread. Of course the $7 Cheerios Sac was awesome.

A word of advice: DO NOT DO THIS!!! Instead you should bid with just under 10 seconds left. This practice is called "sniping". When you bid with more than 10 seconds, all you do is give your competition time to either run-up your bid or out bid you with additional bids. And when you bid with 3 minutes left, you end up second guessing yourself and over-pay with additional bids. Your Columbian Quarter is really nice, but I can almost guarantee you paid much more than you would have if you had bid in the last seconds.

I'll bet you wished you had a urine proof umbrella, eh, for so many people peeing on your parade? Fear not it happens here. I like the quarter, it looks 65 to me. Bidding is rough. If I really WANT a coin, I figure out a high semi outrageous bid with a 3 sec lead time on Auctionsniper. I don't even watch the auction. And I never download auction images before winning. It curses it.

In the coin category, I don't even bother looking at BIN's. And I suspect, those that primarily list their coins on a BIN listing, either have a lot of patience or are afraid they may loose a few bucks. I wonder what the % of sold BIN sales are compared to the numbers listed is.
