Was there a 50th anniversary set for the Kennedy half and I missed it???

I noticed at the US Mint website that approx. 3 million more 2013 P mint and 3 million more 2013 D mint Kennedys have been struck.

Maybe something in the works?

Probably a mad rush something big that we never hear about because we are not insiders. We're just inside , R. image That's a few million more than usual with both mints. Did we pick up that many more collectors ?

Hi, Yes this been discussed numerous times here. We should hope they do something for Mr. Kennedy? but probably not. This coin has been a "fixture" in the collecting hobby ever since it first came out! What a profile. Very crisp and very recognizable. Not only he deserves it ( a special coin year) we deserve it as well, the collector.-joeyimage

No extra S mint Kennedy's?? It would be surprising if they did not include an S or W for such a commemoration...Cheers, RickO

Are they still available in bulk? Perhaps some telemarketer ordered a bunch.

You still might be able to get a Moonlight Mint 1963 Kennedy half if they aren't sold out. image

I think a 2014 silver high relief with a max mintage of 100,000 would be a great way to cap off the series.

From Coin World, with regard to a 2014 Kennedy anniversary set:

"In addition to the possible four-coin set of Reverse Proof coins, other options under consideration are:

➤ A four-coin set containing three Proof copper-nickel clad half dollars (one each from the West Point, Philadelphia and Denver Mints) plus one 90 percent silver Reverse Proof half dollar from the San Francisco Mint.

➤ A three-coin set containing one copper-nickel Proof half dollar, one copper-nickel clad Reverse Proof coin, and one copper-nickel clad Uncirculated half dollar. Each would bear a Mint mark (P, D, W or S) reflecting where it is minted, although final decisions on minting locations haven’t yet been made.

➤ A three-coin set containing one 90 percent silver Proof half dollar, one 90 percent silver Reverse Proof coin and one 90 percent silver Uncirculated half dollar. Each would bear a Mint mark (P, D, W or S) reflecting where it is minted, although final decisions on minting locations haven’t yet been made.

➤ A two-coin set featuring one Proof copper-nickel clad half dollar and one Reverse Proof copper-nickel clad half dollar. Each would bear a Mint mark (P, D, W or S) reflecting where it is minted, although final decisions on minting locations haven’t yet been made.

➤ A two-coin set featuring one Proof 90 percent silver half dollar and one Reverse Proof 90 percent silver half dollar. Each would bear a Mint mark (P, D, W or S) reflecting where it is minted, although final decisions on minting locations haven’t yet been made."

It's (barely) possible that the 2013 Kennedys were struck for circulation, for the first time since 2001. Kennedy halves are the coin equivalent of the two-dollar bill, which sees limited circulation but continues to be produced from time to time. Also, the publicity surrounding the recent anniversary of his assassination may have sparked a bit of public demand for the coins.

If I have a vote it would be for this option.

50th anniversary of the assassination, 2013? Not likely. 50th anniversary of the half dollar, 2014? I have heard it will be next year.

I would think that the 50th anniversary coin would be minted with the date 2014. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I would love to see anything along the lines discussed. I would also love to see them retire the coin at that point. Put the energy somewhere more useful and interesting!

I forgot that 2014 would be the year if a special issue or set is in the works, thanks.

So I agree that possibly increased demand due to all the news coverage of the 50th anniversary of the sad event caused need for more bags and rolls.
Or that maybe some telemarketer could have placed a large order.
Just glad I didn't order any thinking mintage would be a low 1.8 million each only to find out almost triple that amount would be minted.

I checked the mint site for upcoming items in 2014 and nothing is listed for the Kennedy except for the regular bags and rolls with 2014 date.
    Hoping for a nice surprise.
Which would REALLY be a surprise coming from the mint!
