"PL" designations on gold

I was wondering if I am correct that PCGS does not confer PL designations on gold, while I have seen NGC and ANACS do?

I think PCGS PL and DMPL'd gold only on the SS Central America gold label coins.

Hope I remembered the right shipwreck.

They do it for moderns. Not sure about classics.

That is correct. They have not otherwise used the designation on classic US gold coins.

I just sent in a gold coin for grading that is strong PL (frosty devices and all)...I asked them (on the submission form) if they could designate PL if they feel it is PL.

We'll see what it comes back as..

I see NGC does PL designation on gold, thinking PCGS should probably consider it also...

PCGS will decline your request, no doubt about it. I actually like how NGC grade all coins PL if they warrant the designation but PCGS has long ago ruled that had no plans to follow suit.

This is correct. You will not get a PL designation on your coin. They only do that for select series.

<< <i>What is the best thinking on the issue, does PCGS refrain from doing "PLs" because they don't think the coins the other services describe as so, are really "prooflike"? >>

Yes ^ And it's my understanding, that NGC refrains from giving the designation in recent years, not sure though when it comes to gold. I've heard stores of older PL designated coins re-submitted to NGC and coming back w/out the PL designation. You notice some modern business strike clad coins have the PL from NGC, but not recently.
