1940-S RPM#1 Jefferson Observation
Ok, it's been a while since I posted on this 1941-S RPM#1 variety. I have seen numerous examples and they all had the large cud on the right side top of Monticello. I'm just letting folks know I'm making an observation correction!
NEW FINDING! Now I'm puzzled! I have added a third picture of a 1940-S that is NOT an RPM#1, but possesses a similarly located die chip. Are these the same die or different with a coincidental die chip?

i don't see any cud. i see a nice rpm tho.
if the images were a bit worse, i'd almost wonder if it were extreme die fatigue or doubling instead of an rpm.
it is neat that you found a pre-chip state.

These used to be called "Alligator on the Roof".
It's an interesting-shaped die chip, but it's not
a Cud (a true Cud involves the edge of the die
breaking off, not a chip in the field of the die).
There's other dates with the Alligator chip; some
are on the left side of Monticello vrs. the right side.
Thanks again
