Newp: 1855-D Half Eagle (GTG: Grade Posted!)

Here's a piece that I purchased at this past weekend's Tennessee State Numismatic Society (TSNS) Show in Chattanooga. The 1855-D is the third rarest Dahlonega half eagle in overall rarity.

This piece has some weakness on the rims, but has a well defined eagle's neck and upper shield on the reverse. Most 1855-D half eagles (even high grade ones) have a very mushy eagle's neck and upper shield. It has a Medium D, although the holder indicates "Large D." Many 1855-Ds have been mis-identified as the Large D, which is in fact very rare.

Doug's new book indicates that the Medium D is scarcer, which is a mistake. He was probably confused by the mint mark mis-identifications in the Pop Report.

Feel free to guess the PCGS grade.

Edited to disclose grade: XF45/CAC, in a three-prong PCGS holder (but not the newest "transition-style" label). We've got some excellent Southern gold graders on the Forum. As of 12:53 p.m., 18 of 23 postings nailed the grade (either said XF45 or XF45+). Thanks for all of the nice comments!
