Those things are sooooo small that you never see that crappy detail!

  • It's legit, isn't it?

  • Maybe it was run over by a truck. It is a details coin.

It's legit as that's what a BG-857 looks like crudely struck and doofy looking.

  • A lot of crud and ware for UNC and even I know that. lol image

It's not just bent as it was also cleaned... It's not uncommon for a detail coin to have multiple issues and the TPG service just to list one.

  • I've seen a few 1/4 dollars before, but at least they had evenly spaced "stars" (blobs). But if it's good it's good and I guess I won't mention a word to the powers that be.

There's a slight star burst around the 6th star from the left right over the tip of the tiara... That's a obverse die characteristic that's present on all BG-857's.

  • That's why I like this place, I learn new stuff everyday. Today I learned I need to spend a little more time looking over some fractional gold pieces!

  • take this one home and you can look at it real close.

  • I think I'll leave this one to someone else, but it is lovely.

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

Were you thinking this was a fake and going to report it to eBay as such?

I like it. However not my interest. It is real-that is just the way they look. A lot of those fractional gold coins look funny.

Yes, but I wasn't sure, that's why I asked the group. I didn't think anything so crude could possibly be real. If I had just done a little research I would have looked on the PCGS website and I would have seen a copy of that very coin and realized it was indeed not a fake. My error, but I'm glad I waited and didn't report it.

It's lovely … just not as lovely as it was before.

  • Yes, perhaps, in it's own special way.

Many of these very tiny California fractional gold pieces were struck from hand engraved dies and were quite crude which is one of their charms. And, yes it is a real gold coin and you should not report it as a counterfeit especially considering you don't know anything about this series.

That is the point I was trying to make here Perry, thank you.
One should NEVER report anything as fake if they are not very very familiar with the series.
That would be a grave injustice to the seller and I would be quite pi%$ed off if someone who did not know what they are doing tried to do that to me(or anyone else)!
Nothing personal here to anyone....just be very careful what you do report.
    Best!
