I'm paranoid when it comes to collecting ASE's.

Bought this one in 07 from a forum member, it was fine for years. Then in the span of a couple months this occurred. Any ASE no matter how grand can spot. This includes a PR70 95W. My one and only PCGS ASE, weird my NGC pieces are fine, scratching my head.

Advise: Buy SAE's 4 or 5 years after they've been slabbed if you're going to insist on slabbed coins. The facts are if they're gonna spot, usually the first couple of years is key.

As for the poll, I sold all my SAE collection a year or so ago and I don't regret it for a second. Milk Spots or not, the resale market on these will kill your pocket book since they are terrible coin investments.

I feel much better about my Lincoln doubled dies than I ever did about SAE's.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    Excellent advise!

Because of spotting, I no longer get my ASE's slabbed.

I believe slabbed and non-slabbed alike have the potential for spotting, but I don't want to spend the money
on slabbing, if in a few years, the coins develop spotting which is no longer covered by the guarantee, I believe.

I sold off all my PCGS 70 ASEs because of the removal of the spot review guarantee. I sold off my NGC 70 Registry Set 3 years ago. I held that set for about 8 years and was lucky to get what I put into the set. I did decide to just collect all the special anniversary sets in NGC 70 only. I had the experience that the NGC sets spotted less than the PCGS, though that was just me. Once these coins spot and even if the are conserved back to 70s, the process won't last long, the spotting returns.

I also decided to stop buying the PCGS DMPL 69 5 oz ATBs bullion versions since the spotting guarantee was rescinded.

I still love the ASE series, but reduced my liability in collecting these ASEs in 70s substantially. Hopefully, the mint will produce a high relief version of the ASE. Maybe next year.

Buying the yearly proof 70s became boring to me so I stopped several years ago. The introduction of the anniversary sets each year made it less boring and put some excitement back into collecting the series.

I've only kept one PCGS MS/PF70 2011 25th Anny set with the 2nd gen Mercanti label. They are in a SDB, individually bagged in ziplocks. No spots yet, fingers crossed. I flipped all the others sets while the flipping was good. Maybe if my 2011 set makes it to 2021 w/out spots the premium might be better than it already is.

My recent fun from the Mint now consists of the stunning Reverse Buffalo and my anniversary sets.

The anniversary sets came out of the capsules on a sealed set that I hadn't opened for some time and the toning is stunning.

That is it for me on the SAE's. The PCGS stuff scares me with the history of spotting. I haven't looked at the 1oth anniversary sets that are sealed - yet, they might be electric.

Stacking helps reduce paranoia, although it does little to prevent milk spots, even as the thought of them has changed the face of "collecting", for sure.
I've never considered the series as "collectible", as that goes... but have always been in favor of the old cliche' " to each their own. "

I still say that it takes humidity to get those spots to form. Obviously, to me, that there is a defect in
the coin at every spot and it's acting as a catalyst when humidity is present. Moisture is forming around
that "defect" on the surface of the coin and thus showing up as a spot.

Not something that you can do anything about, except move to Las Vegas to avoid this problem.

Just sent them to me and I'll hold them for you!

I had an NGC run date that spotted. Sold them to a board member when silver was about $40/oz. Will never collect them again

This is what all ASE's need for the future market.

A good old fashioned layer of toning which will hide, or at the very minimum, diminish the effect of those pesky milk spots!

I do believe that "spotless" ASE's exists. However finding them can be an expensive endeavor.

There's the answer Bob and I want credit for this idea folks!

PCGS and NGC need to open a "Bullion Division" in either Henderson or Las Vega Nevada. That way, the air which gets trapped within the slab is of the lowest possible water content.

Say wait, wouldn't the "moisture" philosophy dictate that NGC slabbed coins spot more frequently than PCGS since NGC is located in Florida?

RickO, you live in a bunker deep in the Pocono Mountains.....is this correct???
Perhaps higher altitudes play a role in no spotting on ASE's. image

Local flea market dealers just got in 2 boxes of ASE NGC 70's today, all but like two coins had spots, some really bad.

I own more than 50 MS/PF 70s and so far so good. I keep them in individual Intercept bags in a safe. I dont think the bags will do any good if its comes from the mint predisposed with the issue. It's a crap shoot for sure. But I like the series and will hold them for the long term. B

Has anyone reported problems with the pucks?

I generally try to take a look inside my SDB every 6 months to check on spotting of the ASE's.

I think it's random. My 2012 set is flawless and my 2011 S and 2011 RP are flawless too. The rest of the 2011 set though spotted. There is one good thing about this spotting issue though.

There are way too many 70s grade. At least we can claim that we have 70s that stayed spotless, maybe more valuable. Maybe we can ask if the ASE stays spotless for 3+ years it can get a special label or sticker added to the label =)

All of my ASE's are in OGP or ATS slabs. None have spotted. This doesn't mean they won't - fingers crossed. Would really suck if my 95 W did. Has anyone had a 95 W that spotted?

It's amazing that this proplem can't be solved.

Meant to ask Moy about this at the Balto show yesterday but forgot.

If anyone attends his forum at 11 today please ask him and Mercanti about this.
