Cleaning gold !!!

Timbuk3Timbuk3 Posts: 11,658 ✭✭✭✭✭
I recently purchased two $5.00 Indians, a 1909 d and 1911 s.
Because of the inclused design they have some "crud" in the
inclused areas. They are AU sliders. Is there any way to remove
them and not affect the coin if I decide to have them graded
by our host?

Thanks !!!

As they are only AU, the careful use of a toothpick and/or Q-Tip should do the trick.

I probably would not touch them, but if you must acetone might remove some of the crud.

Why would you want to remove evidence of circulation on a circulated coin? Trying to do what?

Acetone soak. If it doesn't come off with acetone, then it's probably the kind of crud I'd want on my gold anyway.

Incuse gold is messed with and cleaned all the time, please leave those poor pieces alone! The reason why the luster is so often weak on UNC (61-63) range pieces is precisely because of how often the pieces were dipped and messed with. While your pieces are only AU, don't add any more to the unoriginal pile than there already are.

I have a good dealer friend who has sworn by lemon juice for years... soak and swirl only.
    When in doubt, don't.

Learn to appreciate the originality or sell the coin. Don't mess with it.

I would suggest that most amateur efforts to "remove crud" will result in making the coin less valuable.

Acetone soak and agitated rinse, followed by hot running water will remove the crud if it bothers you. Perfectly safe and will cause no harm at all to the gold. Cheers, RickO

This bears repeating..."Incuse gold is messed with and cleaned all the time, please leave those poor pieces alone!
