Does anyone remember the Dennis the Menace show? Mr. Wilson was the cantankerous neighbor that Dennis loved to aggravate. Mr. Wilson collected coins (an episode featured trying to

sell or have them evaluated by another collector). Does anyone remember what he collected? image

    This dates back to 50 years ago, but I remember Mr. Wilson got stuck with a phoney 1907 Periods variety rounded rim $10 gold. I remember something about it getting lost in fountain along the way, and the cops coming in to arrest the dealer who sold it to him. This was when the original Mr. Wilson, Joseph Kerns, played the part. Later when Gail Gordon took over after Kerns' deather, there was an episode about a Mercury dime.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Used to love it as a kid...
    I had forgotten that "good ol Mr. Wilson" had collected coins though.

    I mostly remember the well intentioned Dennis- wrecking havoc with Mr. Wilsons prize Dahlia garden......

    I do remember that also but I never did know which series he collected, but from the pictures that gave him alot of coins.

    I have not seen the show in reruns on cable TV, but I did spot a DVD set at Target that took me back to the early 1960s. It was a lot of fun. The show aired on early Sunday night in the Philadelphia market.

    I remember the episode about the Mercury dime - didn't they accidently spend a 16D dime in a machine, that they were trying to get out?

    The photo I posted was from an episode of "Dennis the Menace" that aired in 1959. The show was about Mr. Wilson's coin collection -- and in the episode he bought a rare coin -- an Uncirculated 1907 $10 Indian Gold piece with rolled edge and periods for $250 (a price portrayed on the show as very expensive). Mr. Wilson even made some comments on how crazy and extravagant a purchase it was. The coin turned out to be fake and the "dealer" shown in the photo on right was a scam artist.

    I was curious how much that $250 coin was going for today. The 2010 Redbook lists it at $105,000 in MS63 condition! That 1959 price of $250 was confirmed by a Type Coin book I have that lists coin prices by decade, and it lists the price of that coin in 1960 at $260. Oh how times have changed!!

    It's also interesting how when Mrs. Wilson dropped the Ten Dollar Indian Gold coin on the carpet later in that same episode, the camera showed it for a few seconds and it looks like they used a REAL Indian Gold coin on the show, as you can see the outline of the distinctive Eagle on the reverse. Kind of cool that they were using REAL coins!

    I have always loved Mr. Wilsons coin collection. Based on the 1/2 dozen episodes that elude to his collecting, I always thought it was an extensive type set. Boy, to have that collection today we can only dream.image

    I remember the following:

    Dennis and Tommy are in a contest. Th e prize is an 1895 Morgan Dollar. Something happens- ther was some sort of problem and Mr. Wilson writes out a check for the 1895 Morgan

    Another episode

    Dennis and Tommy collect Lincoln cents- Mr. WILSON SUGGESTED THEY NEED A HOBBY. Somehow they get to look through the parking meters for the city and they find 3 1914-D Lincolns and give one to Mr. Wilson. I remember Mr Wilson saying something to the effect "Why Dennis...I have been looking for one of these for years".

    I'm watching the episode "A Quiet Evening" on the local television station.

    Mr. Wilson gets stuck babysitting Dennis, and the two neighbor kids, Margaret and Seymour.
    Mr. Wilson keeps showing off his 1919-D Dime worth $100. Unfortunately, they show a Barber Dime, not a Mercury Dime.
    Seymour uses the dime to buy some candy and Mr. Wilson breaks into the candy machine.
    Needless to say, Mr. Wilson get arrested. Funny episode.

    I'm confused on why they would used the wrong coin.
    Why not use a real 1919-D Mercury dime?
    Was a 1919-D Mercury worth $100 at the time?

    In the more resent movie he was into gold coins.

    The 19-D would be worth 100 easly if it was unc.

    I remember 1 episode where he showed a coin to Dennis and said this is a 1885 dime fresh from the San Francisco mint! image

    I used to watch the show too when I was a kid. I still have the red & blue coin books from that time and it takes me back. Thanks for sharing this one. I also forgot good ol Mr. Wilson collected coins and this was a good episode.
    The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

    The show still airs daily in Phoenix. I no longer subscribe to cable but my digital antenna picks MeTV, which shows all the old black & white shows. Very refreshing.
    There was an episode in which a crook tried to buy Mr. Wilsons collection with a bad check.

    Dennis was my role model when I was very young image I made sure when I grew up I would never be like Mr. Wilson, but here I am collecting coins image
