    I've also heard people say semiquincentennial which I suppose just means half of a quincentennial (500 years). I guess we'll find out which is more popular in 13 years image

    This is a bronze copy of the gold medal that was awarded to General Daniel Morgan. Morgan led a force, which included a group of inexperienced militia, to a surprising victory at the Battle of the Cow Pens in Cherokee County in South Carolina. After the British had been unable to put down the American uprising in the North they moved the point of their operations to the South. There the British dealt the Americans a number of defeats, including a crushing embarrassing rout of forces under General Horatio Gates at Camden.

    The Americans were badly in need of a victory when they met the British forces under the much hated Banastre Tarleton. Tarleton, a much hated and cruel British officer, had earlier had 200 unarmed American prisoners executed at Waxhaw, South Carolina. The concluding scene of the Hollywod film The Patriot was based was based upon this battle.

    French master medalis Augustin Dupre executed this medal, and it is viewed as one of the great works of art in the Comecia Americana series.

    The Continental Congress also awarded silver medals to John Edger Howard and William Washington for their leadership in this battle.

    To me, the Libertas Americana medals are an iconic symbol of both the Liberty provided by Independence and the efforts required to achieve that Independence. From the Original medals struck in silver and bronze in 1783, to the small Centennial tokens of the 1870's, to the giant Bicentennial medals, and the more recent mid-size restrikes, the image of Liberty endures:

    This was my first detector coin find from the 1700s. Found an unholed 1787 half real a few feet away the next morning.

    Pretty cool date for my first dug 1700s coin, eh?
