The premium was paid for the color/look based on images.
When recieved on hand I felt the coin wad overgraded. The premium was paid based on images. >>

I liked the look of the coin when it arrived, said I'd keep it, but was unsure of the color being natural, which is why I over paid and said I'd keep it.

Perplexing set of statements.

1) opinions cover good counterfeits, too. Putty is doctoring and is an opinion until removal makes it fact.

2) neither is discussing the cheaper option and fact determing option to return it to PCGS ?

3) despite the above, illini has many opinions here. My suggestion is to now ask himself what he'd want done if he were the purchaser. He's not going to get a clear answer from here, even if there were a poll.

I don't think this is a great thread, but if a mutually accepted plus not whined about later decision is made, the good.

Everyone can learn something, and hopefully something is settled.

The OP bought a coin for more than guide due to its look.
The OP liked the look when it arrived.
The OP said it'd be kept.
The OP was unsure of the color.
The OP submitted to CAC to make sure it was not doctored.
The OP also submits to CAC for consistency in the collection.
The OP wants returns on doctored coins.

Is there anything here that could be done differently next time?

Yes...don't start a thread until you know all the facts.

This coin should have been sent back to PCGS for confirmation or disproval of the alleged puttying before anything was said in public. Period.

AnkurJ did not name the seller and the resulting discussion was worthwhile. There's no clear cut answer and it seems there are people that would go different ways:

Offer 85% as seller
Offer 100% as seller
Request return as buyer
Eat the tuition as the buyer

I have worked with sellers that don't give an inch and sellers that offer 100%. It's worth knowing this before conducting the transaction.

In this case, it's also good to know about the bean policy. If you don't trust your eye, it's safe to request the seller get the coin beaned. Otherwise, try to get it beaned within the return period or take your chances.

With respect to doctoring, I think there are no winners, except the doctors.

That is correct, Ankur and I discussed it further and I ended up buying the coin back from him. Provided the post office delivers it as scheduled, I should have the coin back before the Long Beach show. If so, I will then have the coin on display at my Long Beach table for anyone who would like to take a look at the coin in hand. Towards the end of the show, I will submit the coin to PCGS for review to see what they say about it. I will also try to take some better photos and share them here for those who will not be at the show.
