My Flying Dutchman Has Arrived...

Wanted to share a card I recently acquired. Really excited about it and am amazed at its condition after all these years. Had the pleasure of spending some time speaking to Karl Kissner about finding these cards, the set, his grandfather, and the details around the find. Saw them at the last National and knew I had to have one of the Wagners. I'm very much looking forward to having this in my collection...

The Black Swamp find was arguably one of the most noteworthy finds in the history of the hobby, so I would absolutely want that attribution on the flip, if I were the owner.

    Congrats on the pickup.

    +1

I'm usually not a fan of the personalized flips, but the pedigree of the Black Swamp definitely adds to the already considerable wow factor of that amazing card.

    Congrats, Dan!

Remarkable! For a card to get an 8.5 grade at PSA I have heard from their employees at shows that cards of this condition have a full grade until the lead grader sees something to lessen the grade one half. I wonder what was the 1/2 grade deduction was on this card. Hopefully not politics.
Definitely keep Black Swamp on the header. It can only help. Also a very fair price I might add!

That statement applies to the condition and quality of the card in the holder. This example certainly looks deserving of the grade, imo.

You're missing the point or being intentionally obtuse. The Black Swamp find was national news and heavily promoted by PSA on their web site. I'm certain that PSA chose to designate these cards as such due to the historical significance of the find. There is a big difference between that and someone requesting to personalize their own collection. Furthermore, if I owned one of these cards, I'd certainly want this attribution on the flip, given the significance of the find. Such an attribution (in this particular instance) does absolutely nothing to "detract" from the card.

Edit to add: On a similar note, famous or highly noteworthy coins are annotated on the flip by PCGS, as well. While I am not particulary in favor of "personalizing" flips, I recognize that certain pieces call for such attribution because of their significance.

No new adjectives to add, so i'll just say great pickup Dan.

Tim, intelligent individuals in this hobby like yourself understand why retaining the provenance is significant in this case, but sadly you are not conversing with one of those individuals above. He's merely carrying on with you because no one else answers his posts anymore since he started selling empty boxes, wrappers, and the gum from those empty packs on eBay.

Nick is right about provenance. While it is not so big in sports collecting, it is HUGE in coins and comics. I am one of those people that wonders where a collectible came from. When I find a 1942 penny in my change, I wonder where that penny has been and how many people have used it over the past seventy years. To be able to 100% document exactly where this fabulous card came from, and to have it come from such a famous find lends more value to the card IMO. Ask a comic book collector if they would prefer to have their comic labeled with the Mile High (Edgar Church) pedigree, or if it should be without it. I will guess about 99% will give a resounding YES!!! Same here I would think.

Great looking Wagner card, congratulations. Karl Kissner emailed me a few days ago and said he will be at the National this year. He couldn't make it last year but I got to meet at least a dozen of the family members. There were around 20 of them at the Live Auction. They are some of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. And Karl told me, last year, that the find brought the family closer together. He went onto say there wasn't 1 argument about the whole thing. All of the relatives were sharing in the proceeds. They really are a very, very nice familly.
Eventually I will own a card from the find. I am just waiting a little longer. If I had to pick one, Dan's Wagner would be a great one to have...Once again, congrats on a magnificent card.

Edited to add, I would definitely want, and keep, the pedigree on the flip.

Congrats on an amazing purchase, Dan.

Due to the newsworthniess (if that was a word) of *that* particular card, simply from a historical perspective, the designation and premium are a given.

Sounds more like jealousy rather than critiquing.

    Nice grab Dan. Absolutely iconic!

Anyone concerned about the display of provenance while comparing it as a misapplication of a vanity flip really has no grasp of the history of the card and the find and such a declaration should be dutifully dismissed.
