The Navy saw fit to promote me to Commander. Time for a giveaway...and the winner is TallPaul...one

As a few of you already know, a couple of years ago I had to make a tough decision to leave Monterey. At that time, I had just extended a year there after working through a very unpleasant divorce. My career was really in shambles. I was working hard and getting good evaluations, but in the Navy, it is often not the job you do, but the job you take....and Monterey is not the place you go to get promoted.
My girls were in San Francisco, about two hours away, with my ex. I felt that Monterey left me in no mans land, unable to be a more complete and competitive Naval Officer, and unable to be the dad that I wanted to be. There were no jobs in San Francisco for the Navy and I needed to go to sea. So, I very cautiously decided to take orders to the USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier in Everett, WA.
I worked hard, got qualified as Officer of the Deck and four out of every 24 hours of the day for nearly 8 months, I drove that ship around the world and did the meteorology and oceanography along the way.
Even so, I was told that my time in Monterey would probably keep me from promoting. Miracles happen though it seems, and today the Navy saw fit to put me on the promotion list. Looks like I will put the rank on October 1st.

So....as a celebration, I am giving away a Swiss coin from my type collection. I bought this coin raw from Marcel Haberling while I was in Zurich in 2009. Sent to NGC a while back and it came back as a MS66. Two sided toned in light golden shades. Very nice twenty rappen from a very cool series.
Every person that posts gets an entry. If you are or were ever active duty, I will throw two entries into the hat. All you have to do is post your service and your dates.
Thanks to all of you on this board whom have supported me along the way during this transition, with special thanks to SethChandler, TomB and ColJessup. This board really is like a family, and I am very thankful to be a part of it.

I don't think most people have any idea how enormous these carriers are. I've been on the USS Midway and the Lincoln has more than 100' of length and 30,000 tons of displacement on her.
Being the Officer of the Deck must have been a very gratifying responsibility. I wish you the best of luck in your promotion and future assignments.
I retired from the US Army in 2005 after 20 years and 21 days active duty.
If I win, please give the coin to a deserving Young Numismatist.
and 2-4 month deployments was more my speed. And I prefered to be the shooter rather than the target as OOD......
The Navy's not a bad place to be as the next 5-10 years of economic difficulties rejumble our current world.
USS Andrew Jackson (SSBN 619B)
USS Boston (SSN 703).....both long gone to the boneyards.
