1875-CC Trade dollar (w/grading poll)

My sixth purchase for the new 19th century VF-XF Basic Type Set.

I'm sorry the pictures are not ideal, but they should serve well enough for the purposes of this poll, I guess.
Update, 2/22/13:
I've reimaged this with my scanner. My scans will show the details better but are a bit less accurate on the color.
Obverse-reverse scan, 800x400
Larger obverse scan, 800x800
Larger reverse scan, 800x800
There had been 43 votes in the poll prior to my reimaging this coin, so obviously most folks based their assessments on the seller's photos, above.

The coin is in a Third World slab, and though the grade on the label is entirely irrelevant, I'll reveal it later.
I have some doubts about this coin and sort of hoped I'd be outbid at the last minute. For eight bucks and change more, I would have been. Still, it has pretty nice detail, is a Carson City coin, and it's not scrubbed to death, anyway. I do sort of wish now that I'd held out for something with a little more CircCam contrast.

Redbook says $450. Numismedia says $600. I know the Redbook is compiled a year or so in advance of its edition date, but I don't recall ever seeing a $150 spread like that before.

I paid about XF money for it by Redbook price. Well below Numismedia XF price.

I would put it more at XF45. The apparent marks on the obverse left and right fields kind of concerned me. There is a recent thread about this seller cracking out problem coins and putting them into his own problem free graded slabs.
It should look nice in a circam Dansco 7070.

Yep, I was fully aware of the seller's notoriety, but figgered I'd take a chance, anyway.
Since the cat's practically outta the bag now, I might as well post the Third World slab.
(From which I intend to liberate the coin if I keep it.)

"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
Not shiny.
I like it and think it's a keeper.
There is that chatter to the right of the wheat sheaves and cotton bale on the obverse, but I can live with those marks.
Can't say for sure how original it is and whether it was retoned or not, but it looks OK to me.
I'll try to scan some better pictures, if my scanner will cooperate. I may or may not liberate it from the NNC holder, as mentioned.
For giggles, I might just keep it in there if I can scan through the plastic. The label grade is slightly inflated but hey, it's a free plastic holder.
The seller, "centsles", for all his notoriety on these forums, will get positive feedback from me on this transaction.
(To my memory, this is the only time I've bought from him.)
(Edited to fix the usual typos. I miss the Preview feature, though I never used to use it like I should.)

Au58 90-99%
Au55 70-89%
Au53 55-69%
Au50 40-60%
XF45 10-49%
Xf40 trace-9%
Vf30-35 trace
Now all of those can move a few points with the total coin concept depending of the other relavent factors like hits, wear, tone and strike. Those are for avg diaonogists and assuming the other attributes are avg too, if any of them are heavy on one side or the other a coin can be netted up or down in grade depending on a complex weighting system based on market priorities and if the attributes fall on the obv or rev of the coin and or in obvious or hidden places.
While that coin has little wear it looks to have little luster and avg everything thing else with nothing to support a higher grade than 40. It looks like honest xf40 money to me. If it has sheen on the fields or luster around the devices it could easily get bumped to 45,
PS- there is indeed little if any luster, but plenty of CRUSTer.
Held at a certain way under this light, there is a very, very faint trace of iridescence to parts of the toning, particularly below Liberty's right elbow. (Just to the right of that slight rubbed area, and on up towards her breast and armpit). Sort of an undertone of sea green to the grey.
The reverse toning has more of a faint pink-gold coloration at certain angles, but in both cases, the color to the toning is subtle indeed, and visible only when turning the coin certain ways. Basically it is grey toned like you see in the pictures above.
When I get the chance to do newer images (scans), I doubt my scanner will pick up on any of the colors I mentioned. It's nice for a scanner, but of course a scanner is never in league with a good camera. So perhaps one day I will send this off to someone who can properly photograph it. Come to think of it, I might be sending some of my ancients to Todd soon, so maybe some of these Liteside type coins can tag along.

<< <i>I'm okay with XF40 at the price I paid, I guess. >>
In pcgs plastic I see those move at the 500-550 level.
(Yep- $460 exactly.)

<< <i>I paid somewhere in the mid- to upper $400s. $460-ish, I think. I'd have to check.

Considering the 50$ to get it into pcgs plastic the market has spoken and voted xf for the only real poll that matters; the wallet poll
But by the end of spring, I might re-up my PCGS membership and send this puppy and the Seated dollars and any other standouts from my set on in, to be entombed.
Edited to add: I am sort of doing things "backwards" these days. All of my ancients are going into pricey TPG plastic via NGC, and most of my US coins are raw. I guess it's that contrarian streak in me, 'cause I'm going the less popular route on both sides!

The results didn't thrill me, but I thought they were... umm... adequate.
Probably still some color issues with the scans. I think centsles' photos are more accurate in the color department.
(BTW, I also tried reimaging my 1871 dollar but failed miserably and so will keep using the seller's pix on that one until I can get someone to do a proper job of it.)
Here's my go at scanning the Trade dollar.
Since this was my second-most expensive addition so far, I might give a whirl at submitting it to PCGS and/or getting proper photos done of it later.
I think I'll submit it in the NNC AU55 holder and see if it will cross over to PCGS. Maybe upgrade?
(Haha- kidding- I'll crack it when that day comes, of course.)
