<< <i>Here is something very inbteresting, I believe their is a good chance that this piece is a match to the Overton Plate Coin!
Edited to add: It appears I was given bad info from coinjunkie, I took him at his word that E PLURIBUS had wear on it and not all Overton 104's had the blotting out of many of the letters. I was just contacted by a member who informed me that all O-104 have this attribution ie are struck like this so therefore it may not be a match. That being said the Overton Plate does look vdry similar to this subject coin , but I am not familiar with the Oveton Plates and I am not familiar with Bust Halves so I will let someone who is do the necessary matching to determine if this bust half is a match or not, and I don't want to even give odds. I will stay out of what is not my forte. I will be following this thread to see if anyone takes this miniproject on though.
Update: it isn't the Plate, easy peasy, just checked Star1 and on this example it is missing the Southern most pointer or whatever it is called and on the Plate it is there, so that puts that to bed. I thought it woul dbe a lot harder. >>
OK, technically the strike may be "good", but if the die is defective, the net result is still the same: mushiness.
Yes, these tend to be mushy. But it not correct that all are like that. This AU55 is (was?) drddm's. I agree it is the exception rather than the rule. Lance.
I have one in an MS-63 holder with mint luster peaking up through the toning, and an 1807 Bust half in an AU-53 holder with color. I probably overpaid for those, but not as much as this case IMO.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. And this is precisely what bothers me about this coin.
CBHs are not Morgans. They were made earlier and stored differently, and as such, a neon CBH is about as unnatural as it gets.
Now, before I get pommeled, let me be perfectly clear: (1) I have not seen the coin in hand; (2) I am neither criticizing Mark Feld, nor CAC, nor PCGS; nevertheless, the fact remains that "CBH" and "neon" are a noun and adjective that do not go together.

If he gets a pass for one coin, how about 2, 3 , 25? What if Mark did a post with his top 10 picks of every auction? Agree with much of what you say. But will add a CBH in AU and neon don't work for me at least. Although I bet if someone posted a f-12 flowing hair half with colors (culla ) such as this one a lot of folks on here would love it. Some don't care what it is, or what it's on, just as long as they gots the culla.

That 1823 is really a beautiful piece whoever got it. (in case the photo ever disappears, RichieURich posted it) And while I'm here, I got a great laugh out of TomB's "Cyclops" inference for Mr Feld. So that's the face behind the hand in Charmy's post from FUN. I knew he was hiding something .
So yet another individual gets buried in a pretty coin. Nothing new under the sun. Agree with Scoobydeux re his comments re color, CBHs, Morgans, and this coin.
"Vou invadir o Nordeste, "Seu cabra da peste, "Sou Mangueira......."
Those colors are highly unusual for a bust half. And it looks nothing like the other 1831's posted in this thread. So it's the equivalent of an A+ Morgan toner. Those tend to bring multiples of the A/A- level toners. CAC is a ready buyers at AU55 money - $500 give or take. The other few thousand $$ are up to the bidders.
Coin may be a freak. Or may not. Usually these kinds of colors are seen as secondary toning from albums. This one to me appears like it could be the coin's orig skin. That would make it a freak and a candidate for king of the circs. Personally, I'll take an attractively toned MS63 with full luster for a little less money. I guess if the king of unc common date busties is up in the $50K to $100K range. Then this coin at $3K or $4K doesn't break the bank. Like a toner Morgan I could see this coin at 3X to 4X premium which would be in the $1,000 - $2,000 range. $3600 is out there.
FWIW it has been reported that this coin has traded at the $3500 level before

I don't understand the rage for wildly toned circulated coins, especially once they are in the XF or lower range. It seems neutral when a midrange to high end AU coin is toned if it has luster, just not wildly toned. When someone posts a thread about a forum show of "utterly original" coins, you never see anyone post an "Electrically Toned" F12 coin, because it's just too strange to be "natural." It may be a stigma due to the age of the coin; that it should have stable enough surfaces to not be affected by the sulfur in albums, but if it didn't have stable surfaces when it was put into the album I have to wonder how it became unstable, and the most obvious answer is some sort of cleaning or dipping. It's just not appealing (IMO) to see a coin with nearly lusterless surfaces have such great color.
Well I trust PCGS and cac -- and if they like it and bless it, thats good enough for me. I really have to commend Ankur, he liked the coin and made the effort and investment to get it. I hope we see more photos. I personally would love to see an out of the slab trueview photo, which is the best way to see the full color of this coin, but I am guessing with an ogh and a gold cac sticker this will never be cracked
As mentioned there is an epic 170 post thread on this ATS which was spawned by Mark Feld's post (he started the thread)

Without quoting all of what Realone said a few posts above this one, I agree with most of his points.
Gorgeously toned Bust halves bring a big premium. I've bought and sold these and the prettier the coin, the more money it brings. The 1823 I posted brought big money, but the customer loves the coin. If he ever falls out of love with it, he said he would offer it back to me, and I would be happy to see it again.
It reminds me of the 1904-O super-toned gorgeous Morgan dollar recently sold on Teletrade, which sold over $4,000. Big premium over what an untoned one would bring, but it didn't seem to bother the bidders incl. the buyer. If I had another chance at it, I would have bid higher on that coin, and hopefully gotten it. And whether I sold it or didn't, wouldn't worry me at all.

Everybody thougth I was crazy when I paid $1200 for your icon ElmerFusterPuck, in an NGC AU55 holder in 2005. I sold it for $2400 I think to Don Willis. It brough just under 5K in auction I believe. God knows what Bear paid for it. I'm sure you paid 4K or more for it and are more than happy with it. Don't know why it surprises anyone for what this coin sold for.
Looks like the 1831 would be a coin that, if I were putting together a crazy toned bust half set, would NEED to be in the. That 1818 would be a great companion....

John, I think the subtle point here is not one of color vs no color, it is normally seen CBH color vs. neon Morgan type color. I agree with you in regards to wildly toned CBHs, of which I am a huge fan. But neon?
<< <i>My understanding is the photos aren't exactly representative a the true color of the 1831's toning. So everyone is basically making judgements from only a photo of the coin which is always unwise to do especially with highly toned mooses! >>
Realone--agreed that the picture does not tell the whole story. But I beleive that juicing neon purple and pink on a CBH that aren't there is unlikely.
"Discipline is never an end in itself, only a means to an end."
The price paid for this 1831 half in AU( probably 55 or better) does not surprise me, at all.
While unusual, with the greens and pinks(?), I can still remember the 1818 that has made the rounds, now with the OP collector.
I hope to have pics, soon, of the most recent wow CBH in AU, purchased at FUN on the bourse. In a rattler, and from an old collection, it has never been in a sale, or on a dealer website. It will contend for the prettiest circ CBH, along with this beauty.
The coin presently in my set is a PC 65 for this date, but it will need to go when the new one is available for posting.
Previous remarks aside, I'd love to see AJ's new toner ( I'm sure it is amazing)...but the one coin in his possesion I'd love to get my grubbies on is the 1807 50/20 of his, purchased from S. Downey I believe... further more, if I was at the FUN show with $3700 to spend on a choice bust half, I would have been RUNNING to that same persons table
Cant wait to see Tahoe Dales new one posted either !
This reminds me of the $69,000 Oregon Trail toner of a few years ago somehow.
Nice CBH, premium for the grade, and though it has traded at around that level previously, I still think it's WAY overpriced ($1000 level max imo), especially considering it's lack of scarcity. People get "gold bean fever" way too easily IMO. That said, there is obviously a market at that level because it's been near there before. To each his own.
That looks to be a nice half! I was tracking it during the auction; if the second picture in this thread is at least part way there, then the Heritage image truly flattened out all the colors and luster. I'm hoping for a 'great' picture of this half soon!

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

Looks like the 1831 would be a coin that, if I were putting together a crazy toned bust half set, would NEED to be in the. That 1818 would be a great companion....

<< <i>Everybody thougth I was crazy when I paid $1200 for your icon ElmerFusterPuck, in an NGC AU55 holder in 2005. I sold it for $2400 I think to Don Willis. It brough just under 5K in auction I believe. God knows what Bear paid for it. I'm sure you paid 4K or more for it and are more than happy with it. Don't know why it surprises anyone for what this coin sold for.

While unusual, with the greens and pinks(?), I can still remember the 1818 that has made the rounds, now with the OP collector.
I hope to have pics, soon, of the most recent wow CBH in AU, purchased at FUN on the bourse. In a rattler, and from an old collection,
it has never been in a sale, or on a dealer website. It will contend for the prettiest circ CBH, along with this beauty.
The coin presently in my set is a PC 65 for this date, but it will need to go when the new one is available for posting.
Cant wait to see Tahoe Dales new one posted either !
