finger print question

In your opinion, does a finger print that extends over the rim of the coin and onto the surface automatically preclude a 65 or even a 66 grade?

no [for silver]. I can cite numerous examples and agree with them. Copper may be a different matter

I have heard it mentioned on here several times that it is supposed to limit the grade to MS65. But I have also seen them on higher graded coins. The possibility exist that it was not viable at grading though.

I have a pretty 65RD 1915-D Lincoln spoiled by a prominent fingerprint. I made the mistake of not returning it and instead sent it to PCGS, feeling sure their guarantee would kick in. HRH said he ran it past the lead grader twice and each time he felt it deserved 65RD.

It depends. We need more information. Is it a copper coin? How big and how dark is the finger print in relation to the overall toning? While a finger print may not affect the grade it will most certainly affect the marketability of the coin. Let's face it---most collectors don't like finger prints on their coins.

I was asking the question in general-

My thoughts are that it should not- I am interested in what others may think.

The coin that prompted the question is silver- the size is comparable to a Morgan Dollar. I see the coin in the 65-66 range and feel the print is is minimal, should not prevent a 65

I do not like fingerprints and usually avoid them. If, however, the coin is special in some way, and the print very unobtrusive, I could make an exception. Cheers, RickO

I guess to each his own. I don't care for the Morgan above at all. I've seen six figure coins in MS 66 with prominent fingerprints. The TPGs apparerently are okay with them; I am not.

But could have been boinked with when the print was placed. Or after on another part of the coin. Or image.

Since you like prints I will be happy to put finger prints on all of your raw coins before you get them slabbed. No charge---just include return postage.

Why is a fingerprint not considered environmental damage?
