Grellman and Noyes both gave the coin a grade of MS65, and they are tough EAC graders as well.
Bland was apparently a tad out to lunch on this one - but at least he concurred the coin as CC #1.

Very nice looking coin, I'm sure it's even more stunning in hand where you can see the luster!!!

Grading that one a 61 is just silly and grading like that makes EAC grades less relevant.

EAC grading is part hair splitting honesty (a good thing) and part politics (a bad thing). It's a way to keep coins owned by the "in crowd" on top when a major challegner comes out of the woodwork for the "out crowd" or a total stranger.

Far more than I could pay. >>

I edited my earlier post to "Far more than I could pay" from my original "Far more than I would pay."

I believe this coin realized $160,000.00 in the Sept. 2009 Dan Holmes sale, so both of my earlier responses were true.

I have not seen the coin in hand, but when I look at the Stack's auction write-up, here's what I see:

It's a Rarity-1. Assuming this is the Sheldon Scale, with an estimate of at least 1,251 coins remaining, this is a common coin.

What makes it stand out is its high grade. I'm not a fan of condition rarities in general, but there are exceptions.

However, this coin has spent time in the collections and inventories of some notable collectors and dealers of old copper, including about 20 years in the collection of Ted Naftzger, Jr. Given his (and old-time copper aficionados in general) penchant for coins that have been waxed, oiled, or otherwise "conserved", I would assume this coin is not original.

Sorry to drizzle on the parade, but there are two sides to every coin.

Sweet coin, now it is time for someone else to own it for a few years and pass it on down to the next collector.

    Very nice.

There appears to be just a little die clashing. This gives an old gem more character.

I'm surprised this date survives in such a high degree of preservation (and quality).

It's really me...and that was simply an honest assessment with the caveats that I had not seen the coin in hand and my comments were based on the Stack's write-up.

The point being that, while we may ooh and ahh over the coin, there are other things to consider.

But a trusted friend who has seen the coin and is a recognized expert PM'd me to say the the coin is original and incredible...and I believe him.

I expect it will do VERY well at auction. It should.

I was under the impression that all 1805's have dies clashing. For sure I could be mistaken.

    appealing to me. YMMV.

Bruce, the nicest old copper I've ever seen in all of my years of collecting was the 1814 Plain 4 Classic Large Cent you once owned, graded MS 64 by PCGS in an OGH.

Looks like you weren't the only ones to think that way. Here is the link to the 2009 Goldberg Dan Holmes auction lot where part of the pedigree notes:

"Ex Carl Wurtzbach (who said he used to lull himself to sleep looking at this coin)"

It is one of those rare, beautiful, and incredible early copper coins. As far as rarity goes, for the variety it is second to none. Though it received MS61 by Del Bland, there is no other MS example in his census. I believe the runners up are 5 AU55 and 6 AU50s.
    Just an incredible coin.

The details really make this coin stand out.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
