? about US silver dollars.

Hello! Im just starting to collect US silver dollars.

I know a little about Morgan,Peace, and American Eagle. Are there any other US silver dollars to collect? Was there a US silver dollar before the Morgan?

Thank you for taking the time.

As it appears you are a beginning collector, I would begin collecting a set of BU Eisenhower dollars, including proofs, which can easily be accomplished for around $200. After that, you would ideally have a little more knowledge, and could begin collecting something more ambitious, like Peace or Morgan Dollars.

One of the nice things about collecting coins is that you can collect whatever you like. One thing I'd recommend doing early on is defining your goals and purposes in collecting. Once you've got that roughed out, spend some time in some good books to educate yourself about the coins you're looking for. It will make the experience much more interesting and will help you avoid some of the potential pitfalls that you might encounter along the way. Also, consider joining a local club, establishing a relationship with a few dealers, attending a show or two, and broadening your exposue to the hobby. The Redbook would be a great place to start.

You obviously found this forum, so you're on the right track. If you spend more than about $100 per coin, I'd strongly recommend sticking to coins already in PCGS or NGC holders. These carry an authenticity and grade guarantee which will keep you clear of the many counterfeit and abused coins out there on the market.

One word of caution. Once you start collecting, it will attach itself deeply in the substance of your brainstem and you'll find it impossible to give up.

    Edited for speleng.

And get a good book. This one is expensive but PCGS has made it available for free online - Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States - A Complete Encyclopedia so now one everyone can read it.

Welcome to school! You'll learn a lot on this forum, coin related and ethics as well! This might be jumping the gun a little but learn of the error/variety of the coins too! Some carry hefty premiums,so don't be left out in the cold.Like I said though, one step at a time.Good luck and have fun!image

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Thank you all!! Great links, knowledge, pics and advice!! I look foward to reading up and expanding my collection of silver coins. My metal count is in my signature. Hope to be at 100 total by years end[2013].
Not really doing "sets" at this time. Buying anything that catches eye and is silver/ within my budget. I really like the Morgan,Peace,Eagle, and some of the comm rounds.

Hope everyone has a great 2013!! Thank you again for taking time to help me out. Jeff[pit]
