I like the split rim around the bottom of the obverse and the cuds are cool too. Maybe a late die state for the issue? I like the fact that this is a piece that can be used as a means of identification as well. Nice coin.

Is that a test mark at 11:00 on the reverse?

If 'test mark' means a file mark then I would say probably 'no'.

Most likely just a 'nick' that was incurred post mint.

From the PCGS price guide webpage...here's a PCGS au55 for reference (notice the same kind of 'test mark') so I'm feeling fairly confident mine should grade and not be deemed 'genuine' (for rim damage).

I don't collect this series, but to me it has the eye appeal of a 62 or 63. I sure don't see 53.

53 if it doesn't gen for cleaning. 55+ detail. I'm suspicious of the bright areas around Liberty and especially on the reverse. The 55 pictured appears much frostier and more wholesome. I don't recall trhis date or variety coming with semi-PL surfaces.

I love image the AU-58 in my type set for the AU-58 grade. My coin is the "normal date" piece, and I cannot speak to the over date status of this piece of this piece, and the value.

From the picture I am not a fan of this piece because the fields look like they have been smoothed in spots. I will try to post my AU-58 here to show an original surface piece.

... Sorry, I can not do it ... I agree with the previous post ... I do not like the bright areas.

Looks to be uncirculated but has been cleaned or at least rubbed at one point in it's life. I still thinks it's nice enough to grade 60-61. Not good enough to 62 and I think it has enough MS qualities that au58 is not the right grade either.

I like how boldly you can see the overdate, as for the coin's grade I would have to say PCGS Gen. AU-55 cleaned. The scan might be giving the impression that the coin has been cleaned which might not be the case.

I'm having difficulty grasping the view that my coin looks cleaned or has 'suspicious bright areas'.

When you compare it to the PCGS website's coin (the second picture) the coins are quite identical if and only when you consider the fact that the pictures were taken under different lighting conditions.

The 'light areas' of the first picture (obv - around the stars; rev - around 'united ten d america' and surrounding the lower half of the egle's border) is just unmarked 'frost' surfaces which can be found on the PCGS coin which is located on the obv - date area, first star, sixth to tenth star; rev - around 'ten d and states and surrounding most of the eagle's border.

These areas on both coins exhibit (to me) a strong similarity.

The visual appearance looks different only because of the photographic lighting used.

Is the line (scratch?) from the tip of the nose to the ear on the coin or holder?
Wear looks to me to be minimum, but lots of bag marks. I would guess AU58.
The coin sure looks bright in the pics. Maybe dipped?

definitely dipped- clear it is not original. There seems to be a light obverse scratch that goes across the portrait- I suspect that could be an issue that may prevent it from being graded.

Personally, I have seen worse examples graded. I just do not see this on the high end of the AU range. From the image, I see 53 tops

I would grade it AU-50 and no higher.

Here is my example in AU-58, and I fully agree with the grade.

    AU55 details

AU58 net graded down to 55 for bag marks and then detail graded for the scratch on Lib's Cheek. I still like it as a coin and good luck, it might get a grade if the staple scratch is old and doesn't refract extra light.

I only noticed the scratch after I took the picture as it picks up the light in just the way to highly define it.

I'll probably send it to PCGS soon.

Not the nicest 58 out there but a score for sure. That's a pricy coin in that grade, congrats!

looks like you did very well! gold is difficult to photo, i think. with that grade, i imagine it looks much nicer in hand. it does appear to be lightly cleaned, but that could just be the photos.

i think it's interesting that both your piece and billjones' piece have a similar looking pin scratch across the cheek to the ear.

Just an FYI, not wanting to cause trouble -- the "1853/2" is one of those overdates that is
not absolutely definite. The lines in the lower part of the 3 do not match exactly with a 2.
It is possible that 10 years from now it will be in the same situation as the "1869/8" Indian
    Head cent.
