Should this have made it into a holder way back when?

Half cent in old green label PCGS

To me it's ED that should have precluded it getting into a holder; but perhaps it was cut just enough slack given the age of the coin (vs. say if it were an Indian head.) Still, I think perhaps nowadays it might get Genuined - MOO. Thoughts?

Have to wonder what it looked like when it was slabbed?

I don't care what holder it is in, I find it unattractive and I would not purchase it for my personal collection or for resale.

It's interesting, often I'll look and see what else a seller has when a coin of theirs catches my eye (for good or bad.) Without wanting to pick on this particular seller, from a MS-64 Standing Lib and a '55 dd Lincoln in their other auctions, it seems as though their stock in trade is to buy (I'm assuming cheaply) coins that made it into first-tier holders, but certainly have negative eye appeal (again in MOO.) This stuff, I would call "dreck", even though it's scarce and "historically popular with collectors" dreck. There are definitely better examples of such things out there. image

This company extends coin collateralized loans much in the way that Collateral Finance Corp. does. Maybe this is a coin from a loan in default ( get my drift?).

While I would not buy this coin, it is copper from 1804 and deserves a little break.

Could PCGS conserve this coin? It seems like it should fall under their grade guarantee, or am I confused about their guarantee?

Who would be surprised if it came back a 50?

For the purists who insist on strictly original copper, maybe this Bud's for you.
Me, I prefer gently brushed with Care and a slightly glossy appearance over this.

Walkerguy, I agree with you on that one!
I think this coin may have went bad in the holder.
If it had been kept raw and brushed regularly it may have never gotten in this sad shape.

I wish I had some Care (or even some Blue Ribbon) to use on my copper. I agree though. It definitely looks better.

This coin may not have looked this bad when it went into the holder. At any rate it now should be cracked out and conserved to the best extent possible. The is no great shakes. It is an 1804 C-13 (Plain 4, Stemless) which makes it the most common variety in the entire half cent series. This one is common even in Mint State Brown. It only gets scarce when it has original red color.

Is this why they prefer to keep copper raw, so
it can be brushed and oiled ?

One of the reasons, yes. Also to be able to handle and study the coins in detail.
I personally have nothing against slabs, as I have quite a few that way - and I know some of these coins were brushed prior
to submitting them image But living in FL, even my raw coins are kept in sealed, inert 2x2's, as I'm a bit skeptical of the old fashioned
envelopes that many use, at least in high humidity areas like mine.

I would not be a buyer of this coin, especially at that price.
    It's just plain ugly.

This coin has obviously turned while in the holder and is probably a good example of why the TPG's have migrated away from guaranteeing copper.

As for the seller? I've purchased many Mel Wacks items from them.

isn't brushing and oiling considered doctoring or cleaning?
