Well I just got my first genuine grade.....*UPDATED* page 2

....and I have to say I was naturally disappointed but not all that surprised.

I guess I wanted to see and learn and that I did.

So without further ado here's my new Genuine 91 - questionable color 1883 10c.
Formerly residing in an ANACS AU58 holder.

Any and all opinions welcome.

    I do think that they do make mistakes though....particularly on toning due to all the doctoring that goes on.

    I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    First I like the coin!

    Second that is my biggest pet pieve(sp). I've said it before and I'll say it again.....color should have nothing "I SAY NOTHING" to do with grade!

    Grade the coin for what it is! Let the buyers decide if they like the color or not!!! image

    Yep.....gotta agree with this. Grade the coin and, if it is such an issue, put a 2nd-ary line on the label stating "questionable color"....but the coin should grade.

    It should have been graded and it wouldn't have been a false grade.

    Toning if it's natural or not ...or pretty or not...should NOT affect grading either way!!!!!!

    I had the same thought. If it were dipped white and there were no underlying evidence of a harsh cleaning (hairlining), it would have probably graded.

    Looks like it was dipped to me and only partially removed the toning. You can see by the knee clearly the color contrast from the protected areas compared to the raised areas. This is what dipping an AU coin can do.

    I am winging this a bit because I'm working from my lap top which gives me less accurate images. Nevertheless here is my take.

    The coin appears to be AT to me with some corrosion on the surfaces. If the coin looks the same in person, I can’t fault PCGS for putting it in a genuine holder.

    Don't feel badly. Back when I was submitting my collection to be graded I got some body bags, some justified, some not IMO. In those days you didn't get anything for your grading dollar if your coin didn't grade. That was especially galling when the coin graded on a second submission. image

    It was an ecomomy sub, to answer a question.
    So nothing was 'sniffed' on the piece.
    I'm gonna crack it out and stick it in my 7070 for now where I can enjoy it.

    Very cool post and follow-up. This just shows how a coin can look different in different photos. If I was grading it from the first set, I would have gone with genuine and low au, high ef at best. From the second set, i can see it easily as mid to high au and gradeable. Very attractive coin and good job getting it graded!
    (oh, and nowhere near my series, all my grading is a WAG for these)

    I disagree. Sometimes even natural toning can become so dense that it mutes mint luster, and a grade reduction should result in my opinion. Moreover, I don't think that AT coins (and I am not saying that the OP's coin is AT) should be graded. The methods used to AT a coin may cause physical damage rendering it inappropriate for a grade even if conservation is performed.
