How did the women in your life react when she found out about your passion for coin collecting?

Women at my office actually find it kinda cool they seem to really like to listen to stories about the hobby...I am in Human Resources...when I 1st told them I was like they will think I am young man in a old man's body...but no I go out to diner with some friends at the office and to my surprise they bring on the subject and I am not talking about some weird looking women...some of them are very attractive.

One of my ex girlfriends use to get pissed when I would be spending time with my hobby but I could not stand her anyway so it all worked out just fine and my marriage with coins continues till this very day!!! And for her well another one bites the dust...no big loss there!!!

  • Lucky for me I bought most my nicer coins before I was married, now it's harder to get away with.

Never once an ill-word or a rolling of the eyes. She comes to shows and spends hours looking at all the jewelry. She has some lineage that goes back to Catherine Howard (Henry the 8th) and she has collected a few pieces from his reign. She has become pretty good at grading as well. Likewise, I leave her alone when she is baking for days before the fairs.

Not a problem---she is supportive. Her hobby is dressage, and she currently has 6 dressage horses. At least my numismatic library and coins don't poop or have to be fed 3 times a day.

My hobbies and interests, all of them, have been well-tolerated by my wife. So long as she has the time and money to pursue hers and I have not (yet) driven us to financial ruin, she has no reason to rebel.

Years ago my wife told me that I had to choose. It was either her or the coin collection. I still think about her from time to time.

My wife still talks about that silver quarter that one of her former boy friend snookered her out of. She collected stamps and coins back then. So I guess you might guess where she stands as long as there is enough money left over to buy groceries and pay the bills.

my wife calls me a coin geek, and this the geek forum. She really does not understand coin collecting and, try as I might, she never will.

She has at least graduated to the level of just rolling her eyes when I write 5 figure checks out.

When I had a wife the few coins stayed in storage and there wasn't any money for more.
Now that there is no wife there is a lot of coins and money to stay on the hunt.

When my wife and I first started dating I found out that she liked collecting coins also. She likes proofs and currency and I am more into business strikes and varieties. It is nice to have a common interest in something and you can share it with them. I am usually dissapointed if she is not feeling well and unable to go to a show with me.

Always funny to show them some great rarity you traded your eye teeth for, and get NO reaction. Ho hum....At least she doesn't get mad & likes the passion part as long as I show it for her in the right way...LOL

My wife supports me and listen to my stories, though she is not really interested (unless I make money flipping some coin!)
Weird thing, she doesn't complain much about the thousand dollars I spend on coins but she had something to say about that $69 soccer jersey I bought last week! Go figure... image

She doesn't care. She knows anytime I spend a lot on something I will be buying her a nice gift within a week or two. I try to keep things fairly even. She even humors me when I talk about my collection too much. She just doesn't want me to go crazy on the subject when we are out with friends.

Had the word "meh" been part of the language at the time, that's probably how she'd have reacted.
  • My wife is wonderfully supportive. She has no particular interest in numismatics, but is happy that I enjoy it.

I'm rather new to these forums, but I'd imagine there are also many female numismatists out there. How does your husband/boyfriend react to your hobby?

  • At first when I mention deep pockets and lots of coins they show interest.

When I explain the deep pockets are so I can carry more change and that the "lots of coins" refers to my near complete lincoln cent and statehood quarter albums they seem to lose interest.

Well, since I AM the wife, let me just say that I don't get any flack about my passion for coins! image

As far as my hubby is concern, not that he has ever had a problem with my coin passion, but for anyone who has seen my hubby's garage (not to mention the side yard, back yard, and clubhouse) full of motorcycles, frames, tires, gas tanks, motors, parts, etc., knows that my hubby has no room to complain about my lil' ol' coins! Seriously, we live in an "American Pickers'" paradise!

My wife is tolerant to indifferent to the actual coins.

I think I see a glint of surprise/happiness/pride/pleasure when she sees me hunched over the keyboard working on one of the posts for my rolling commem collection post. She is more into the history and research aspect of that and likes the fact that I take the time to do that when I can.

My wife's father collects coins too and when I told her I was a collector, she was thrilled I would have something in common to do with her dad.

Its worked out great as my father in law and I go to coin shows together whenever we can...
