**The most valuable First Strke® designation**

So many of us on these boards laugh at, chastise, and deride the modern coin TPG attribution known as First Strike®.
I was reviewing the U.S. Mint issues of Gold collector coins on the PCGS Price Guide this evening.
I am pleased to be the owner of one 2008-W Buffalo graded PR70DCAM by PCGS.
Paid $1,025 to the Mint, got her graded and PCGS slaps a price on her of $4,500 at this point in time.
This purchase was 4 years ago, and for the life of me, I cannot remember why I didn't get the FS designation...perhaps I was too late to the table.
Now, to address the topic of this thread.
The most valuable First Strike® designation has to go to the 2008-W Buffalo graded PR70DCAMFS.....$6,800!!
That's a $2,300 premium for clicking a box and paying an additional $18 for First Strike®.
Can anyone on this forum come up with a more valuable First Strike attribution???

My Gold Buffalo w/o the FS designation.

i do recall reading that FS designations can be given decades after a specific issue is released so long as the original mint shipping box is un-tampered with and meets a pre-determined cut-off date
by the TPG.
if that holds true, then maybe some of the 20th/19th century coins when shipped from the mint if in original boxes could qualify?
it is a long-shot, but just my squeeze into the definition by default

As silly as I think First Strike™ is, I'm grateful for the people who pay extra for it, as it probably keeps the costs of other services from going up.

That's one big reason why I love this U.S. Coin Forum....you get put in your place in short order when you make definitive statements about coins.
One of the better Buffalo to purchase. I don't own one yet and after looking through the information I am not sure it would be
the right time to get one. It seams like my ship has past and probably be better money spent on a classic gold coin.
However I still really love the buffalo

You sort of answered it yourself. A $2300 premium for, what, a couple of letters printed onto a piece of paper? Is it better quality if it's FS? Who can even tell which ones are FS and which aren't and who gets to decide when the deadline is?
JMO anyway.
<< <i>The First Strike Proof-like of the Ultra High Relief is a much larger premium. Goes from being worth c$6,500 to $18,000+.

WOW! Buy the paper/holder, not the coin...if you are ever able to Cherrypick the holder!

They are very specific about what could be FS and what cannot. Sealed monster boxes of SE are a yay but most other products including proof gold before a certain date (I think 2005) are not ok. I have two examples of them not, one I was being serious one I was not. The not serious one was a 1878 8TF VAM 9 Morgan Dollar. It was the die pair that was used for the first strike presentation pieces and the pair was used for only 1 day, the first, that Morgans were struck. Rightfully that idea was struck down. The other I was attempting to create the most valuable Silver Eagle but again was shot down. I had a quantity of 1995-W Anniversary Sets sealed, untampered boxes with clear post marks. When I approached PCGS with documentation of release dates that would put them in the "first strike" window of today I was told they just don't do it for the proofs before 2005. Oh well, a PR70 would have been the most valuable FS I am sure. Sets ended up ATS

Remember, when FS is brought up, passions arise and opinions unrelated to your question flourish!
Good try, my friend.
I LOVE the Buffalo golds and appreciate the pic you added to your query. What an exciting time it is that the 2009 PL is the leader.
Will there be another flurry of interest in a modern so high that this occurs in the near future? 2006-2009; the salad years in moderns!

interesting example, as 'i understand*' PCGS wasn't really grading these PL at the beginning (within FS time frame) but once ATS started doing so, they jumped aboard and regrades really started coming up PL. (*all based imo, due to limited knowledge here. Its possible I misstated something.)
What is the population of 2009 UHR's in FS MS70PL? Regular MS70PL is= 305.
They apparantly won't consider then for FS and there are I understand multiple examples of various sealed gold and silver eagles from late 1980s and 1990s that they won't consider.
<< <i>Here is how I look at it. Whether or not it has the FS designation on the label, it's still the same coin. So, why should I pay more for FS? >>
Simple fact is you don't have too, but somebody will so that $18.00 can put money in the bank for sellers.

confirmed online and I am sure part of the high quoted price. "The original cut off date for the PCGS First Strike designation was March 11, 2009, set 30 days after the original United States Mint shipping date. This sometimes controversial designation does not refer to the order of striking, but simply to the shipping date. More than two years later, on March 14, 2011, PCGS announced that they would assigned the Proof Like (PL) designation to eligible coins."
when resubmitting, a coin, do you keep the FS label? or would the only way to get this, would be to hold the original box, until after they started grading for PL?
The Trifecta Grade. One of only 26 coins graded PCGS MS-70 Proof Like First Strike.
GC auction right now for one, is at $16k with 6 days to go.

That may have been a week or two ago when you checked, but today I believe it stands at 332.
Likewise, the PCGS "pop" on the MS70FS PL coin has slowly risen (it stood at under 10 pop for quite a while) and the last change on this coin in the Price Guide was, in fact, a drop in price. It should be interesting to see what the next few coins trade at in public auction. I would not personally place too much emphasis to what a single one of these fetches in a particular auction but rather take a more global approach to this very intricate coin. In fact, as I understand it, a recent pubic auction of one of these coins had some unusual details surrounding the offering resulting in an offering price far, far beneath the Price Guide (which drew suspicion from at least one major respectable dealer who handles these UHR's). Again, a single auction that should not receive too much (if any) emphasis by the Price Guide editor in my view.

OK OK, Miles you found me out. Not to mention, the passions and unrelated opinions have showed up to my great glee.
Isn't striking a nerve, first and foremost on the U.S. Coin Forum?
