Trade dollar pattern on ebay real or not?

rec78rec78 Posts: 5,966 ✭✭✭✭✭
I dont remember seeing many threads about patterns on this website. I do have a pattern but do not know much about them.

Could this 1873 trade dollar pattern possibly be real? If so isn't it a bargain at $595 ? ?

Are there any pattern collectors on the forum? Thanks for any info.

    Well let's consider

    1. Low feedback
    2. Poor feedback percentage
    3. Not slabbed
    4. Seller has no description, at least make a story up abt it
    5. Never seen a pattern not cost over 1k

Here is a Goloid "J1564" from the same seller.

sometimes these pattern numbers are part of the eBay auto-fill. I'm not sure if that is or is not the case for these two.

TDN does not collect trade dollar patterns but would think he would be interested in affirming that this reputed pattern is a fake.

It looks like a poor quality fake based on the poor quality picture to me but I am NOT an expert on these.

    Gotta love these double negatives.

It looks too 'funky' to me to be real.

    Something strange about it

IMO it's a fake (not a proof, poor strike)

I don't think anyone would need to do a detailed analysis of this coin.

    1. Raw alleged pattern dollar on ebay
    2. Step away from the computer

Quite obviously fake. The reverse strike is very poor.

"Trade dollar pattern" and "eBay" are a frightening combination of terms.

Especially when there is no acronym like "PCGS" or "NGC" or at least "ANACS" in the title.

That right there would be enough for me, but let's add the points mkman123 enumerated:

And it just looks bad to me, too.

Not only would I pass on that auction, I'd run away ... quickly. image

They are both fakes and were sold often on Ebay during the past few years. Both are
underweight and magnetic. Have seen and reported these for years but this is the first
I've seen in quite a while now with the Replica rules enhanced.

These started coming into the coin shop almost ten years ago. The first one came from somebody who had bought it while vacationing in CHina.
