Wow this one has really done a lot of work! This coin weighs exactly 72 grains. Possibly 70-80 years of circulation .....imageimage

    I have one that I found in a nickel box search back in January that I can make out a faint 1890 from the date and a bit more of the head on the obverse. It is the oldest nickel and second oldest coin I have found in box searches.

    It had to have been someone's pocket piece.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I've seen a few Liberty that were that worn, OR at least I think they were Libertysimage

    That's a worn V5C! When you gettin' some of that old early stuff again like the piece that defied a grade yet had some red? That was an interesting thread image

    That's pretty good.

    Many moons ago I had a shield nickel in about that condition, it was in the collection that my brother liberated for smokes and beer one Saturday afternoon in 1971.

    PS- it also seems to be the hitherto unknown "Small Date" variety for that year. image

    Get it Slabbed!!!
    Lowest grade coins, that are certified, is a very cool way to enjoy this hobby.
    I remember George Eggiman, he had the "lowest" grade CC Dollar set.... Whenever I found a super low grade (but TPS gradable) he would go nuts to own it.. remember a couple of them he paid what would be low MS money for them!!!

    I have an 1884 PCGS PO01 that's almost that worn.....rev is virtually void of detail and just enough obv hint of a date to get slabbed. I am still looking for a downgrade 1883 NC type......if you have one, LMK.
