Which of these 2 Buffalos would you keep?

No need to keep both of these Buffs. Now, which one would you keep and why?

My goal is to build a set with coins that exhibit the best possible strike for the date, which also has nice luster and attractive toning.

One day, maybe I'll find that coin that meets all three desires, but for now, which stays?

I like B more, but I wouldn't mind owning either.

The first one because of better hair detail on the Buffalo's head.

    Dead even.

#1 has a slightly stronger reverse strike, but has a bag mark on the ribcage. Obverse has a slightly better strike.

#2 has more bright luster overall, but, suppose the golden hue will eventually look identical to #1. Obverse has a couple of small bag marks. Reverse - hair on buffalo's head is has a weaker strike than #1.

    So, #1 it is.

    BOTH are very nice coins.

Both are sensational. No. 1 has a tiny edge in strike (hair knot, bison's head, tip of tail), No. 2 is more lustrous. In terms of value, luster gets the nod. So No. 2 it is.

The first one exhibits a better strike, in my opinion!

No question, #1 in my opinion. Better strike on the obverse, especially in the date area, the face is fuller and the fields
seem to have a more chiseled look than number 2.

#1 seems to be the superior coin to me. It is better struck. But both coins are very nice.

Both are very nice but I would choose the first one.

One more thing I will point out.

The reverse of coin #2 has a decent size hit running vertically across the Bison's hip, just in front of the tail. The hit runs down and onto the bison's right thigh. I just noticed it is hard to see in the photo, so thought I would point it out. A hit like that needs to be factor into a decision.

#1. it's like splitting hairs though...but what did it for me is UNITED on the reverse. better strike on #1.
  • tightbudgettightbudget Posts: 7,299 ✭✭✭
#1 for me because of strike though the luster of 2 is somewhat better

    #2. I don't like the rim hits a 3 o'clock on #1 though they are minor.

The indian on # 1 looks younger with fuller cheeks
    and #2 has sunken cheeks

#1 has a bolder 1 in the date, #2 has clearer F and S in FIVE CENTS. Neither clearly dominates, but if I had to pick one to keep, it's #1.

  • It's probably just the pic but #1 looks to have a scuff in the field from the bridge of the nose to the mouth so if I were buying based on these pics I would pic #2.

    I will take door #1.

Tough call but I lean toward the second Buff.

Couldn't go wrong with either coin being a keeper.

  • I like #1 for the better strike (esp in the date area), but I love the luster and subtle colors of the second example.

The good part is that with two coins as beautiful as these, there isn't a wrong answer image

Nice dual! #1. has the crisper date #2. has the better tone When all is said and done, I would choose #2. Only because of the tone,It might bring a higher premium. but If not interested in selling, #1. boy o' boy,the decision is killing me I can imagine what your going through. Good luck! #2. Final answer!

#2 by a whisker, because it has fewer visual distractions, especially on the obverse rim.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • messydeskmessydesk Posts: 20,318 ✭✭✭✭✭
    First one.
    - Better strike, especially on the date and buffalo's brains.
    - Dies are in better shape, as the 2nd one is clashed, with what looks like some die polishing on the obverse by the face.
  • erickso1erickso1 Posts: 1,705 ✭✭✭
    I'm in the # 2 camp.

When I see well struck, high grade buffalos, I'm always drawn to the obverse. For some reason # 2 speaks to me. The crease just behind his eye, the gauntness of his cheeks. Just a really cool coin. #1 is a great coin too, but # 2 has the Time Magazine, haunting photo look to it that you don't easily forget.
  • I like #2, seems to have more Pizazz...

I'd take number 1 due to the hit on number 2; obverse between the bridge of the nose and LIBERTY.

I'd keep #2. Strike is excellent on both but #2 is much earlier die state. I'm not all that fond of orange peel texture from die wear...

As a sucker for strike myself, it’s a really tough call. #1 has the better strike in the braid, date, in the hair on the buffalo's head and other areas other posters have mentioned. Strike on #2 is nothing to scoff at, plus it has some cool clashes and I like the color and over all look. After you mentioned it, I noticed the hit on the reverse, which would give me pause. If presented with these two on the bourse floor I'd agonize endlessly over which one. Don't think you can lose.
  • Crazy4CoinsCrazy4Coins Posts: 1,922 ✭✭✭
It is still a toss up. A lot of good reasons mentioned to like one versus the other. The results were pretty even. I think coin #2 has a vote advantage of 3 points. I've been undecided between these two coins for sometime now and this is why I still have them both. I am leaning towards keeping #1 though. I am drawn to the better strike, which I give the most weight to when evaluating a Buffalo nickel, especially for a mint issue where well struck coins tends to be in the minority. The big hit on the reverse of #2 seems to bother me a little too much as well, although it is somewhat hidden.....until the coin is tilted and the light hits it just right. I know, the luster is a little nicer on #2 and it has some color, but not quite enough to overcome the good qualities of #1. But then again....

I might just have to keep them both....I don't knowimage

I never mentioned, but both coins are graded 66

I really think #1 deserves at a plus on the slab too.
  • joeykoinsjoeykoins Posts: 17,571 ✭✭✭✭✭
Randy, how about this,It might sound a little crazy though ? How about resubmitting both, which, if any ( this is the crazy part! ) would come back the higher grade? Like I said; It's sort of crazy taking that chance. Just something else to think about. Like you don't have enough to think about already! - joey
