Just was able to pick up a 1903 MS65 Morgan Doily from one of my valued connections in this hobby!

    1903 $1 6245365 MS65

A nice original skinned MS65 with light golden rim toning. No 1903's listed yet !!!!

I think I may have given up on the eBay stuff -- several connected dealers do much better and make it a lot simpler.

Some good things this update, a new Canadian piece (second one so far) and a new type, a barber dime...but we still need the cert#

Thanks y'all for helping turn this census into a useful resource!

This might be the highest graded DMPL in a Doily Holder.

that thing sold reasonably. i've seen em listed at $900 for retail without the doily holder. seems the doily didn't add much. guess advertising here was moot.

neat coin to see in that holder though

    << <i>Thanks SNMAN . .

I owe a fellow Board member for bringing it to my attention. Seems that despite my eBay searches I miss things. Guess I just don't use the right search criteria, but I would think "Doily" would have made it come up . . . it didn't.

It is the latest coin in a Doily (1984) . . . the only error (DDO) coin currently known . . .and the only business strike Lincoln (the other is a proof). I was pumped to get it. Paid up a bit, but was happy it went for what it did. I had nightmares of "what might have happened". Thought I was lucky on this, all things considered.

By the way . . . the 1887/6 Morgan Regency is back for another 29 days. I tried on the "Make Offer", apparently like many others, but didn't get a sell response. It'd be a fun coin to get, but for the asking price, I would hate to make myself more of a slab-laughing-stock than I already am. Apparently it has made the rounds for about 2 years.

Thanks to all who have helped in the Doily search!

Replied in the Barber Thread as well . . .

Thanks to several of our Board Members, I have been able to complete a Doily subset -- the "Doily Barber Set".

As of this point, each represents the sole survivor of its Type in the Doily Census. Sure, more may appear, but I like my odds so far!

    image

10c. 1907-O MS63 (MS63) 8201291 (Unique for Type in the Doily Census -- See above on this page for pix)
    25c. 1892 MS62 (MS63) 6243027 (Unique for Type in the Doily Census)
    50c. 1902 AU55 (AU55) 6245620 (Unique for Type in the Doily Census)

My current plans for the Doilies are fairly simple. It is obvious that my first maniacal acquisitions of all the Morgans (slabbed during the timeframe when Morgans in MS65 would bring $500 in 1989 dollars !!!!!) were basically interesting, but a waste of time. It was impossible to acquire a majority of the Doilies (when I started there were 120 known), so those first 50 or 60 of them, being mainly Morgans, have ended up being an albatross around my neck. Now, the aspect of 'Type' is much more appealing. Look at Liberty Seated Dimes (1), Indian Cents, Jefferson Nickels, Ike Dollars (2), Barbers (1 each denom.), Large Cents, Washie Quarters (2), etc. The quest for 'Type' has taken over my collecting interest. Just today I had to turn down another Morgie (didn't even ask the price) as it would duplicate (or quaduplicate) a Morgie date I already have.

So . . . as several of you have asked -- still in the game! I have found that connections with a few dealers who actually see these is more important that the eBay war. But as I have said before, I appreciate the efforts of several Board Members who have taken time to point out to me the esoteric Doily here or there.

    Yeeeeeeeeeeehaaaawwwwwwww!

Wow, that would have been a sweet 1799 dollar to win!!!

I just picked up this one off of Teletrade, probably paid too much for it, but it had an interesting look to it so what the heck!!!! Appears to be a new one for the census, but not the first Grant...

I don't think that Teletrade includes the juice in their realized prices. So it was really $260 + 15%... $299. When I put my bid in it was at around $170 and of course I get pushed right to my max bid... happens too often on Teletrade...

I finally received this one in hand and the coin looks awesome, much more so than the Teletrade photos.

More importantly, upon further look the label does NOT have the PCGS letters at the top of the label like all other Doily slabs I have owned previously... and like all of the others I've seen in this thread.

Did I accidentally find a new Doily label variety???????????

    Maybe it's a generation 2.9 image

Another member pointed out via PM that it may just be a printing error... there are other Doily slabs listed in the census with cert numbers near this coin and those have the PCGS at the top of the label. I don't know how the labels are printed, but it would seem odd that PCGS could even be left off by error?

Some great stuff with this update (and more than usual, since it's been a while.) 1799 Dollar! Awesome. Also a second classic head half cent (UNC this time) another Washie (3 now) and another 1921 Peace dollar.

Nearing the 400 mark. At this time about 40% of the surviving population of Doily holdered coins are Morgan dollars...only .26% are Draped Bust dollars (and 2 cent pieces and 3 cent pieces, etc..etc.)

As far as I can tell the only common denomination that isn't represented in the census is a 20 cent piece...and the 50 dollar slug.

    Fun stuff!
  • My first time to read this thread.

I do like the Doily Holders.

Unfortionately, I am only collecting AU58 morgan and peace dollars.

If an AU58 Morgan or Peace doily was available, I would definately be a player.

I will keep looking for any doily holders i can find.

    Nice unique collectable.

I think that you will be hard pressed to find a circulated coin of any kind in a doily or any of the other 3 [2.0, 2.5, 3.5] double holder slabs. Since I became aware of them, I have only seen one circulated coin in them [ IIRC a 50ish 1903 $5 gold half eagle in a 3.5 holder].

Actually, Mike, I think there are five - If I counted right, BAJJERFAN failed to include this one, posted by another member in this same thread not long ago...

    image

But, with your odd doily w/out "PCGS" top-center, there may actually be six different types.

Why don't you try taking it to Daivd Hall at the next Long Beach and see what he has to say... image

I don't think Daivd will be of much help other than to comment that he thought they were ugly. The difference between a 2.5 and a 3.5 is a small shift of the cert number line to the left of the bar code line for the 3.5. The shift difference is small but constant. For the doiles there are several variants of this shift with some being large. If each of those is considered to be a separate variety we could have lots more than 6. I would consider the missing letters and rounded corners still to be doilies.

At least one collector poster here prefers the doily variant where the 2 lines are even on the left end like this example.

  • Billet7Billet7 Posts: 4,923 ✭✭✭
I think Oreville's variant holder is an aberration. I think it was likely hand-cut at a show, possibly because the sheet was missing the perforations. I think it's more like a holder error rather than a holder variety.

Also, I think the real difference between the 2.5 and 3.5 is tag production. The tags were made differently, not just printed differently. 3.5 looks like it was taken from a roll by ripping perforations on the top and bottom. 2.5 looks like it was ripped from sheets, with coarse perforations. I don't think minor printing differences would constitute a new "variety."

    Just my thoughts.

Found this couple that sold in '08 at Heritage while browsing through their archives.

Not mine, but they sure are purty. Just to add to the census. image

EDIT: For some odd reason, when I plug the cert numbers into the PCGS database, they come up "unavailable"...

I think that means they were cracked out and the tags were sent in, so the numbers were deleted. Alas, they can't be added to the census...sorry to say.
