I spent the afternoon at the safe deposit box. Out of 203 PCGS slabs from before the blue label era, only one was a doily. I used to have 2 others, but sold them at auction about 6 years ago.

Funny thing, I just added the very first certified Roosie to the census. There are many sample Roosie slabs, but this is the first non-sample with a grade...funny that they are rare in one capacity and common in another...curious no?

Just scrollin back through this behemoth for the hell of it.

IIRC the doily was created to make it tougher to duplicate the label/insert. The double holder era was nearing the end of its transition between the rattler and the current issue style holder. Apparently, HRH was not enamored with the appearance of the doily and requested it be nixed when the supply of labels ran out.

I agree, Lee. That one was at $80 with an hour to go.....considering it's $15-$20, seems like a big premium....plus the shipping and buyers fee....into it for $125-$130.....

$206 for that, given that numismedia lists those at $40 in MS66 ($166 premium), and the one I won at $26 ($166 premium would put it at $192), I'm pretty sure I can get my money out of it if I ever want to.

I saw a Doily 1891 MS64 Seated dime at the ANA yesterday. I figured a premium of $200 tops. The dealer wanted $1400 for a $400 coin!! He'll never sell it!

Probably thinks it'll upgrade. I can't imagine him selling it for that price. Not worth it for the doily premium, that's for sure.

There's been a sharp decrease in doily submissions as of late. Either the supply has started to dwindle, the demand has decreased, or coin collecting is in one of it's perennial lulls (which seems to happen around this time of year.) Just an observation.

Oreville; I am curious to know more about your newest doily with the hand-cut tag. What have you discovered...is this a fluke? Please share your findings...please-o-please!

There are numerous PCGS staff helping to uncover (or recover) the old information on this old doily sample slab.

I should get more information after the Long Beach show.

Don Willis, David Hall, Van Simmons, John Danreuther, Sandy Locker, BJ Searles, and others have already reviewed this slab and have already assisted me in piecing together various information about this sample slab.

David Hall admitted to me that he was not in the operations end of PCGS at the time in 1989 so he was not able to help too much.

Good question on the number of recent additions.

I know I am not seeing many in the internet situations. Ebay has the same retread(s). Searches there are starting to turn up other early holders that have descriptions including the word "Doily" but aren't themselves Doilies, and it seems any additions I have had in the last 3 months or so have been flukes. Long Beach June was the last I really found any. The Arkansas I added was one I had known about for several years, and other than that . . . . zip.

Anything I say might be construed as self-serving, but I'll throw this out there anyway. There just isn't going to be a never-ending supply. Eventually (ok, I don't know how long, but not THAT long) we will not see anything but a really random holder showing up. How can they keep just coming out? Yup, there will be an occasional one or two from grandpa's SDB opened up in 30 years, but I think the Doily attention that myself and a couple of others have spawned is just fun. In time our attention to them is going to drive the available ones out and that will be that. I really don't think the few out there we don't have in the Census are held by strong hands just waiting to capitalize on "Doily Fever". You have just as good a chance of happening upon one at the local B&M, or running into one in the back tables at Long Beach, or at a local show than finding one on eBay, and the ones you get at a show or at the B&M are liable to be a LOT cheaper.

Another random thought. I think we all like the idea that in this hobby properly selected material, properly held, for a proper length of time, has the chance of being an 'investment' of sorts. Nothing to count on, but perhaps part of a portfolio that has the added benefit of a bit more 'fun' than your stocks. I have often said that the Doily search I have had a blast with is PART of a numismatic collection, but FAR from being the 'only' numismatic investing I do. I certainly hope that the Doilies I buy will at least hold their value, but I have also repeatedly described that these are a part of history, a window into a VERY specific time period of grading, and something that is 'rare' (no, I didn't say valuable, I said 'rare') to find at a show. I find 23 1909-S-VDBs at every local show, 19 1916-D dimes, and even 2 1901-S quarters, but NO Doilies. Yes, I understand the difference and I get a thrill from having my S-VDB, but I also have a 'collecting' mentality, and to get coins in holders that are historical is just (to me) the best of two worlds. The point? I don't buy Doilies to make money. I buy Doilies for the fun of it, the camaraderie with others who like to hunt for them, and the history. Most seem to be Morgans. I may eventually just sell them for the silver . . .

OK . . . enough of the rant. I do believe we may be seeing a slowing of supply. It may have absolutely NOTHING to do with Doily value, but the eventually ceasing of supply was (or is) bound to happen.

No, juice does not include shipping. Figger maybe $10 for that. Keep in mind that there are those who collect variety sets in doilies and that Morgans/dollars make up almost half of the known population. There are 19 Mercs [none before 1930] in the pop report thread so your chances of landing a first year of issue Merc in a doily are very slim. By contrast there are even fewer [4] quarters in doilies.

That is actually kind of a neat crusty looking dime in contrast to a blast white dipped widget [no offense to RickO cuz I like and own white coins too] so it looks like some lucky stiff got a neat coin in a desirable holder.
