I started 20 years ago to make a roll of each 1913,1914,1915 half $ in good to vg I look back at prices I paid $20.00 each and ended at $75 each. It hurts to buy them now.

In addition to numerous pattern engravings, Barber was responsible for the Columbian Half, the Isabella Quarter and the Lafayette Dollar. The old boy was busy!

David Kahn Rare Coins - just listed this last night
and I jumped on it this morning. Its far more original
looking than the one sent to me on approval.

I agree with you, Mike, that 40 barely makes the 40 grade. It would never upgrade to a 45 unless you send it to a third rate TPG. Still a decent looking coin.

Modest upgrade - from a VF 35 to this 40

At Baltimore - I sold off a PCGS 20 & a PCGS 30 - the first day there - so - I know that the 35 won't last long.

Greg,

The 35 and the 40 will be sent into PCGS for regrade.
Both are extremely close to the next grade.

I have almost a dozen coins { Barber Halves } that are undergraded
enough to submit them as a group for an evaluation. My membership
at PCGS will expire this Fall, and I will use my " Free Submission Certificate"
to have these coins regraded.

Here's the VF 35 ... looks very close to a 40 if you ask me... wouldn't expect a Green Bean on it though !

I stumbled accross this this morning - and after having
looking over the images I had of my AU 58 of this date
I knew it was time to upgrade this date.

The seller is an aquaintence from ATS and he spotted my
ATS & eBay name and inquired if it was I bidding.

He was very cordial and stopped the auction - and awarded the
coin to me at my current bid - which was under my Max bid.
What a great guy - I won't give his name out for fear of any
adverse comments he'd get from the under bidders...

Stupid stuck Thread...

Ok - while I was posting my new serial numbers
to my inventory book, I came to realize that I have
my fair share of one date - the 1908-S...

Don't know how this happened - but I have these
graded coins...[ all PCGS ] :

F 15; VF 20; VF 30 ; and a pair of XF 45's.

Now ... lets see if I have all these coins' images !!

The VF 20 has no image - sorry

Dang, haven't clicked on the MegaThread for a few days, and I see Mike has it all reloaded again with a parade of primo halves!!

I gotta get on the stick - I still haven't photo'd my B-quarters from FUN, and I just acquired a started B-dime set with some nice midgrade coins that are Thread-worthy - 94P, 95P, 03S, etc all in crusty VF!

This very well may be known to the majority of Half Dollar collectors,
MrBreeze has consigned his collection of PCGS certified Halves
in VF 35 Grade to the Long Beach Heritage Auction this month.

I believe all the coins are now available for viewing.

NOW THAT I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION ...........

Up until recently, there were no 1897-S Halves graded AU 58 by PCGS.
When I was working on my collection, the best I could locate in AU condition
was an AU 53. As nice as it was ( it should have been in an AU 55 holder, IMHO )
I always was on the lookout for a coin that would either grade or cross as an AU 58.
15 years of searching only led me to my 53.

While browsing MrBreeze's collection on Heritage's site, there in all of its beauty was an
1897-S PCGS AU 58. No mention it was a POP ONE in AU 58. For all I know, it will be
consigned to the Internet only auction. Nothing special written up about it. No fan fare by
it's owner ... just simply thrown out there for someone to stumble accross.

Everyone was aghast at some of the prices realized at AU Barber Half Key Dates
( either in my sale or subsequent sales ). Many of the underbidders made mention that
the prices I realized were an aboration and they were not worth the money they sold at.

Let me set all ney-sayers straight ... For every ridiculous bid you thought bought the coin,
there was an underbidder just one increment away from the top bid.

This newly graded 1897-S is scarcer ( IMHO ) than the POP ONE 1901-S AU 58. I truly
believe there are more 01-S's out there in AU 58 that have not yet been graded.

Prediction in this coin economy - its on a roll again - the 1897-S in AU 58 will close
at $ 22,750.00 +. Amazing as this is...

Just wait until two or three deep pocketed collectors start the bidding. I know the
gentleman who bought my old 04-S in 58 will be waving his bidder paddle till his arm
is sore !! It certainly won't be an aboration when this lot closes.

Big money gets what it wants. And if two or more of them need that 58 to complete that set, then the possibilities are endless. Good luck to the seller!

1897-s AU58 is a big one.
No telling where it will go.
That leaves the 1904-o in AU53 as the last major hole in the series yet to be graded by our hosts in the midgrades.

Oddly, AU53 is also absent in the 01-s and 09-o barber quarters as well.

Which would you keep for your set, I submitted both of these 1898 S Dimes. They didnt photograph well but each recieved a grade and look great.

Jinx86, I'm not real good with dimes, but I'll go out on a limb and say 53 Top, 45 Bottom.

Sent them in at the same time with a group of barber dimes that all came back with close grades all 45-53.
The two above are; Top AU53 and Bottom AU50 which is the grade Id like for my set, some dates have been quite hard to find but down to just a hand full. For the 1895-O I settled on an NGC VF30 about a year ago but have been looking to upgrade, but nice pieces have been hard to locate and seldom come up for sale.
