A Cast Counterfeit Spanish Milled Pillar Dollar
The mention of a counterfeit Spanish coin in the World and Ancient section reminded me of this piece. I spotted this counterfeit pillar dollar in my local club auction. I pointed it out to the consigner, and he gave me the piece to use as an education tool.
These coins are well over 200 years old and can be found with environmental damage. On the surface this piece might look like one of those pieces, but it isn’t. It is a cast copy that is reasonably well done. I am passing this along as it is intended, a learning tool. Sadly when we look at coins these days, we not only have to think about the grade and environmental issues. We also have to constantly have authenticity in mind.
Here is a genuine example that has a similar look.
