Why do I Love coin collecting.....

I wondered if you all started collecting coin because of your parents....
These are my main reasons for my newfound hobby; diversification of my portfolios and to instill greater constraint on my spending habit of any disposable income on the next fashion icon
This would be my choice then....
and now I am saving up for this addition instead

IMO this is a better version of "Why I love coin collecting"

and BTW...... it takes a lot of "growin' up" to be where I am with you all today
Out of curiosity, is this you in the picture?

I consider myself an Island goddess so common sister?
You have me with this one, enlighten me...

Tired of the recent "full of technicals" postings....just want to talk easy stories
The LV bag is about the same price as 1.5 oz Libertas Americana.
Dream on! Lets go technical on handbags for the benefit of doubt on the gender dominated hobbies and investment.
Anyhow, I believe Hermes would be a better choice when it comes to investment in handbags. If I am not mistaking, Hermes increases value even if used while most LV only retain fraction of the retail price.
I caught the coin collecting bug from my Gram showing and telling me about Lincoln cents. I was shown Morgan dollars but as a child they seemed so out of reach for me. At the time I could still capture wheat cents once in a while in change but Morgans, not a chance.

Older generation is for Hermes
Let's talk stories without being so uptight shall we?
@TurboSnail
My Mom gave me a couple old Morgans and I grew fond of them....
So are you focusing on gold or do you have other areas that you collect such as silver and copper?

Lol . Haven't you see the similarity between the collectors of coin and handbag yet? Ever heard of modern junks from some of our members. j/k I am just pulling your legs.
LUV leg pulling & I
U
Haven't bought anything else since coin became my main attraction
Mostly gold; Peace dollars, hard date Morgans and currently CRAZY over Libertas Americana
Oh good. Less competition for the copper.

My friend Mickey....you may have all the coppers in the world

My expert advise would be getting whatever Paradisefound is buying. Who knows? She might had started a new trend of what young ladies are willing to collect. Some dudes may even fantasize owning the same coin to lure in the babes. At the worst scenario, you can always sell it to her(Paradisefound) when no one else want it.
J/k I will stop for now. Need to sleep before another 11 hours of work. Goodnight everyone.
GNight Sweet dream @TurboSnail
That's a Vulcan holding that purse.
When I think back, there was a woman posting to this forum roughly a year or two ago that was working with a dealer. She mentioned that they were bringing high end purses and I think jewelry and watches to the shows. Anyone remember her and what dealer she was with? Any idea how they are doing with their high end stuff?
Found it. It was four years ago! Where does the time go? It was Amanda. No idea if she's still active.

I really don't know... maybe it's the dates.
I became interested in coins when I had my paper route....I used to get he occasional IHC, Columbian halves and SLQ's....Mercs, WLH's were common change then....My Dad did have a few Morgans, but he was not a collector. Gold is my favorite though... just love the beauty and heft of a large gold coin. Cheers, RickO
@Paradisefound if your going to post a purse here at least show one that can hold a Box of 20
my dad went on a vacation to Las Vegas before I was born and brought back about 800 peace dollars. he said they used silver dollars in the slot machines back in the day. he let me see them when I was about 6 years old, a lot of nicer au's and bu's in the bunch, no lower end ones at all. I started collecting bu wheat rolls shortly after that with my birthday and Christmas money. he gave me the 800 peace dollars last Christmas, I said no way, they are yours and walked away. I went home and they were in the backseat of my car. I was upset
You have quite a DAD @coinpalice Do you still have some of them?
thanks! yeah, i have them all. I don't know if I could ever sell any. going to keep them and pass them on to my daughter who enjoys collecting coins as well. someday she can pass the story to her children
Cool thread...

Coins and purses do have something in common - ugly examples of both can sometimes carry a very hefty price tag!

I can't argue with your choice!!
I still think you should collect Buffalo Nickels..............
Pete
Two things, the history and how much the coins have traveled and seen. Second, the art of the design is so compelling.
I like your topic! I think I saw you mention Barber's in another post! Thinking about collecting Barbers?
Which one do you think is "harder" to complete in all aspects of collecting?
I am studying the Buff book by David Lang...fascinating! There must be a good book on Barbers too I should get
As a matter of fact... I've learn so much history from my coins....especially those commes
Unfortunately IMHO there is really not a good book on Barbers...just the usual stuff. Just take a look at the POP Reports. Depending on the grade I'm sure the Barber's are scarcer than the Buffalo's. While I haven't ever focused on Buffalo's....I have the Barber Half's. It is approaching 50% of the coins I see in holders I don't approve of for 1 reason or another.
Most have been grade in the last 2-3 years.
agreeing with you and if I decided on Barber and it would be half dollars.
couldn't see the "Haku Lei" of those dimes

I hesitate to do this, but to prove my point in my mind...which coin would you buy considering the price?.... curious as to the reactions.

I am with you there! Don't collect the quarters at this point because I like to finish what I start! Don't care to have house money in an 01-S quarter in the grade I like...there is supposedly 1...but I bet it isn't in it's 58 holder anymore!
NONE
I don't see any VF 20 can possibly satisfy my curiosity & I rather tripled the expense for MS62 or >AU 55 IMHO
@amwldcoin
To be a devil's advocate, I'll say that I don't understand.
If you can readily accept a modern replica/knockoff of a historic French-American medal, why not go with a fake-o/ copy of the designer purse too? Saves money, that's for certain.
My indulgence is sinful but value wise I would go with the genuine designer purse along with modern Libertas Americana re-strikes any day
although I do see your point
I have close to 8 times the price I am asking for my VF 20 in my AU58 I bought 4 or 5 years ago! Not many nice Barbers slip through the cracks. You will find that out if you go after the nice ones!
@Paradisefound
That was a better response than most.
I could see myself buying one of the modern French Mint copies of the Libertas Americana medal (for the pleasure of it), but I simply won't kid myself that the modern copies have any direct connection to A. Dupre' or to Benj. Franklin.
Not knowing the rarity and so on; my 1st good representaion coin would be for an example 1908 $1170

@amwldcoin
I would say, yes. My interest in coins started when I was maybe 7 or 8 years old and my dad brought home and showed me a 1916 Buffalo nickel that he found. I thought it was the coolest thing. After that I looked through change all the time.
Today I wish I still had that nickel, but I gave it away to a young collector many years ago while my dad was still alive. I recently replaced it with this 1916 Hobo nickel piece (see photo below) that I inserted in a picture and then put in a frame. It reminds me of my dad because this is what he used to dress like when he was a general laborer in the early 1970's when he found that nickel.

This is a modern replica/knockoff of a historic French-American medal:
This is an official modern creation from the Mint that struck the original French-American medal, using transfer dies made from the original dies approved by Benjamin Franklin:
And this is an original Libertas Americana medal that Benjamin Franklin personally presented to a VIP of the French Court:
I think I have a spare 1916 Buff somewhere; I will PM you when I find it
OK?
