Low-ball question

SmudgeSmudge Posts: 9,813 ✭✭✭✭✭

There seems to be a lot of interest in low-ball coins, but they are all large coins like Morgan's and $20 gold's. Is there any interest in low denomination low-ball coins like a 3 cent silver being slabbed poor or fair?

Well, the population of 3c silver is 3 in PO for the entire series, and 10 in FR. I imagine this saturates the demand.

So probably the smaller the coin, the smaller the demand.

Low-balls are a niche within a niche. If the underlying series doesn't enjoy widespread popularity when compared with other series, low-balls of that series probably won't, either.

Thanks for the info. Mine is worn to the point that you can barely read the C III. No damage and the rims are good. I think it would straight grade PO, but not worth the $ to have slabbed. It does have old toning.

Thanks your generosity knows no bounds, but I'll pass or ask Shirley the Real McCoy.

It does seem only the large silver coins are prized in this grade. I have never understood the attraction, but then, I never understood collecting beanie babies or belly button lint. ;) Cheers, RickO

This has been true for a long time. When I was dealer I had customers who REFUSED to even consider looking at or buying coins like gold dollars. Some collectors don't care for small coins PERIOD.

As for the low grade small coins, I had seven Silver Three Cent Pieces in my junk box when I started as a dealer. They all sold eventually.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

have you looked at registry sets to see who needs this example? I would start there.
If you find some slots not filled or with higher graded examples and it looks like the owner is really trying to do a lowball set, then shoot him a message. Negotiate it ahead of grading perhaps?

Good info. Thanks, but I'll just sit on it for now.
