Looks like some kind of law enforcement auction. I tried to contact them with no luck. I think $5000 would pry one I have in a "Counterfeit" slab out of my sticky hands. I sold one to a collector for $2700 in the mid-1980's.

It's a law. Possession of a counterfeit is subject to seizure. Treasury does not mess around with counterfeits of U.S. coins

Let's see ... The Federal Government can confiscate 1933 double eagles that were made legally in the Philaelphia Mint, and yet it can auction off a counterfeit which it is supposed to be ILLEGAL to own.

Is it any wonder that our justice system is in the crapper?

I just looked at the link. It's enough to make me puke. I guess the Hobby Protection Act doesn't mean a damn thing. The Government can openly sell counterfeits without the word "COPY" on them.

Would the industry/hobby collectively have a stroke if they stamped Copy on an Omega?

Good point! I think they should have had it slabbed in the educational "Counterfeit" slab rather than sell as raw.

Frankly, they should. @Rogerb raised this issue with regard to TPGs earlier. If you leave them in circulation, they will ultimately be used to defraud someone. Oddly, it appears that we have zero tolerance for Chinese counterfeits, but we just love domestic counterfeits.

Next time someone asks you to help shut down a counterfeit on eBay, tell them that you think counterfeits should be bought and sold.

Ebay, Amazon etc. are FULL of counterfeits. Many being bought and sold right here on US soil. The feds have ZERO interest in stopping deceptive counterfeits so it would be highly unlikely IMO that they would bat an eye at a "collectible" counterfeit.

even if it happened, whoever confiscated the counterfeits might have been misinterpreting the law, or might have misunderstood the historical angle of the presentation - obviously, it doesn't happen much, so most federal law enforcement people have either decided collectible counterfeits aren't subject to seizure or that it's a waste of their time

It only doesn't happen because the Feds don't have the bandwidth to run them all down. I'm not exactly sure why they decided to make a point on that night. All of the old newsletters are online if you want to go through them all looking for the story.

Now, let me make something PERFECTLY CLEAR to anyone here who may not have been properly...ah, who may not have a grasp of...ah, never mind. Let's just say that where I come from, there is a fighting difference between "I don't BELIEVE you" and "You are a dirty stinking liar making up stories so you look knowledgeable and important!" Before I believe something posted, I want proof. Posting Rochester Numismatic Association meeting gets me half way there. Hopefully, someone who was at the meeting (if not you) can give us all a detailed accounting of your story.

PS I say what I mean instead of using "whiny :'( mouse words" like "eff" that need to be explained to me by a co-worker! :)

So the Government has never incorrectly seized anything ?

Note that the US Government seized a large quantity of NORFED "Liberty Dollars" declaring that they were "counterfeits".
A widely-publicized trial resulted in the maker of the Liberty Dollars being convicted of "counterfeiting".

But then later on the US Government returned a large quantity of these NORFED "Liberty Dollars" to their individual owners.

Unless the coin is permanently marked as a counterfeit (usually done with the word "COPY"), the US government has every right to seize it.

Yes, but if you take a little less than an ounce of gold and can sell it for the price or "bargain price" for a genuine High Relief $20 gold, there is a significant profit to be made. This is true for many of the gold counterfeits that have been spotted over the years.
