Find of a lifetime! Collector finds Fourth Known 1854-S $5 and authenticated ATS

https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/6557/discovery-of-a-lifetime-1854-s-five-dollar/
A few sentences from the article:
"A coin that a New England man originally thought was a counterfeit has been authenticated by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (www.NGCcoin.com) as only the fourth known 1854-S Liberty Head Half Eagle.... He had shown it to a few collectors and dealers at a recent coin show, but everybody said they thought it was a fake because until now there were only three genuine surviving 1854-S $5 gold pieces known,” explained Salzberg."

Dreams have the strangest ways of coming true. Great story.
Very cool.
I told them not to post it, or my name.

Amazing! I wrote an article devoted to these coins for CW a few years ago
article says it is a 'multi-million' dollar coin
How come NGC didn't put "discovery of a lifetime" on the slab for my 2016 nickel struck over a 2015 nickel. It certainly was MY discovery of a lifetime, but I guess the difference in value of a few thousand vs. a few million is the answer.
I would love to hear the back story. If it was passed down in a family or inherited the owner might not want others in their family to know...
That's pretty awesome.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Now to get it crossed and beaned : )

It has some debris or spotting on it near the date, No eye appeal.
Why cross it? The plastic will have NO effect upon the auction price of this coin!
I could see why some thought it was not a genuine 54-S: The 4 in the date has a look of an altered 1.
I think it would. I also think it will be hilarious to have such a rare coin instantly crossed to PCGS. They would cross it just for the slap across NGC's face I think!
Yet more evidence that slabbing is destroying COLLECTING!
I’d cross it as I only have one NGC holdered coin which I hope to remedy shortly. Some guys have PCGS only sets. Doesn’t make it right. It just makes it so

The 1851-S $5 is one of the few coins that's even rarer than the 1854-S.

Yeah, probably just an altered 1851-S $5 piece. Pretty common.
Or saving it. Not many people would shell out 2 million for this coin if it was not authenticated by NGC or PCGS.
Here it is alongside the Smithsonian example (bottom). Both share the peculiar 4.

Wow, amazing !!!
Overall, I prefer the one out of the woodwork.

I would like to know how it was discovered. What is the whole story?
Fantastic news! I would also like to know more of the details surrounding the discovery.

Exciting for sure, only people not excited might be the guys who own the other 3...
Where there is one there may be more.
Along and under the shorelines of San Francisco Bay, under that portion of the city of SF that is built on land fill and probably under the grass of multiple city parks in the SF Bay Area that existed prior to 1880 I suspect that there are probably at least three lost 1854 S half eagles just waiting to be discovered. Maybe another one or two buried at various locations between SF and Sacramento also.
Cool story.
That is so cool. Love stories like this.
With a mintage 268, there just might be a few uncirculated rolls yet to be discovered. Perhaps in a bank, a sunken ship or even in the old SanFrancisco Mint. Maybe even the San Francisco Dump.
OINK
really amazing! will be interesting if he auctions it off
this has to be on Hansen's radar
Congrats on the find, so very cool.
I would like more info on the Willis Dupont coin that was stolen. It also was an XF45 graded coin. They claim via photos that it isn't the same coin. Anyone got a pick of the stolen coin?
It was in the Wolfson sale. I only have part 2 of the sale, but NNP has the gold catalog available. Hard to work with image in the PDF to compare.
Hopefully they took longer than 6 seconds to authenticate it. lol
The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

Where does this stuff come from? News alert, there were not grading companies in 1967!!
I believe it was a Coinstar find.
The owner wouldn't say how or when they acquired the coin? Hmm...
So, he was at the show, and asked a dealer how much, and the dealer said,
"Well, what do you need out of it?"
