"A coin that a New England man originally thought was a counterfeit has been authenticated by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (www.NGCcoin.com) as only the fourth known 1854-S Liberty Head Half Eagle.... He had shown it to a few collectors and dealers at a recent coin show, but everybody said they thought it was a fake because until now there were only three genuine surviving 1854-S $5 gold pieces known,” explained Salzberg."

How come NGC didn't put "discovery of a lifetime" on the slab for my 2016 nickel struck over a 2015 nickel. It certainly was MY discovery of a lifetime, but I guess the difference in value of a few thousand vs. a few million is the answer.
I would love to hear the back story. If it was passed down in a family or inherited the owner might not want others in their family to know...

I could see why some thought it was not a genuine 54-S: The 4 in the date has a look of an altered 1.

I’d cross it as I only have one NGC holdered coin which I hope to remedy shortly. Some guys have PCGS only sets. Doesn’t make it right. It just makes it so

Along and under the shorelines of San Francisco Bay, under that portion of the city of SF that is built on land fill and probably under the grass of multiple city parks in the SF Bay Area that existed prior to 1880 I suspect that there are probably at least three lost 1854 S half eagles just waiting to be discovered. Maybe another one or two buried at various locations between SF and Sacramento also.

With a mintage 268, there just might be a few uncirculated rolls yet to be discovered. Perhaps in a bank, a sunken ship or even in the old SanFrancisco Mint. Maybe even the San Francisco Dump.

I would like more info on the Willis Dupont coin that was stolen. It also was an XF45 graded coin. They claim via photos that it isn't the same coin. Anyone got a pick of the stolen coin?

It was in the Wolfson sale. I only have part 2 of the sale, but NNP has the gold catalog available. Hard to work with image in the PDF to compare.
