Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Sounds strange saying, but losing bid bigger. As I learn more and have less type coins I need, the ones that I want are higher priced and more difficult to find. As such, they usually are in auctions. I try to get them at a price I can afford, which is slowly increasing over previous high bids, but alas, most times I get outbid. So for me, I have bid up to my max for some coins, but never won one at that price.
However, I have paid more for a few coins then my max bid, but these were bought directly from dealers and no bidding involved.

(Forever a low to mid value collector).
I am still thinking about this. Both are probably pretty close and I suspect that a losing bid was the high bid.
