The 1839-D quarter eagle was the first $2.50 coin produced at the Dahlonega Mint. It is also the only Classic Head quarter eagle that the Georgia mint issued. As such it is an extremely popular coin. It’s rarity has been compared with the 1838-C quarter eagle although it has now been established that it is a little more common. The coin is very scarce in AU and quite rare in Mint State. Most of the surviving examples fall into the VF through EF range.
The coin displayed above is graded MS-60, but my grade is AU-58. There is a slight rub in the fields and a touch of dullness on Ms. Liberty’s cheek. Nevertheless this an attractive example of this scarce and popular issue that draws considerable interest from southern gold specialists whenever it is offered.

I purchased piece from Doug Winter in a swap and cash deal. I had another 1839-D in my collection, which was okay by not great. I traded that in on this piece.

Here are Doug Winter's photos.

Nice Dahlonega gold.... I notice your grading is almost always more conservative than the slab grades Bill...and that speaks well in my opinion. So often, ownership seems to grant a one grade higher....Cheers, RickO
