Dave & Adams has a 1976 Topps baseball wax box (15 cent) for $4000. That's a good price but it's not graded. I've been looking for one for a while, thoughts ?

D&A has sold me fake packs twice. I don't buy any older unopened product from them as I don't believe they can properly authenticate it.

I bought some 1960s cellos from them a while back and both were re wraps(no good). But they do have legit stuff, IM only listing my bad experience that was over 1,000.00
Why haven't they sent it BBCE? there's your answer
Collecting Unopened from '72-'83; mostly BBCE certified boxes/cases/racks.
Prefer to buy in bulk.
It's a bit low for that year - I'd be totally uncomfortable with it.
My take? Steve would "OK" the box for about 300 bucks which would net them at least 1500 more dollars.
doesn't sound promising
What packs were they? How could you tell they were fake?

If you really gotta have it then have them ship directly to Steve Hart for authentication and wrapping. Make sure they understand that if he deems it not legit you get a refund. If they are not willing to do that then for sure don't buy it!!
I bought a box of 1987 Fleer Basketball from Steel City one time. It went to Steve and he didn't like it. Box went back to Steel City and I was refunded my money. They took care of me.
This is an interesting thread to me. Reading between the lines (or not even reading between the lines), the sentiment is that D&A, one of the hobby's leading unopened sellers, is knowingly selling bad packs?
If I had $4000 to spend on a box like this, I'd certainly scrape together a few hundred more to do exactly what UFFDAH suggests. If it comes back "good," it's a win-win situation. No-brainer.

It's a good price and I have purchased vintage wax (if I recall correctly, 1976 OPC and 1977 Topps) from them before without issue. As noted, you can have them send straight to Steve for authentication and if it fails they should refund your money.
There are a lot of pictures of the box, the top of the packs, a side view of the packs, but no pictures of the seals?

Its possible BBCE has already rejected this box. We just don't know. BBCE doesn't seal rejected material and stamp “fake” on it for prosperity. It simply goes back to the seller to find another sucker.
No different than PSA sending back reprints to the submitter.

i dont know if they are knowingly selling bad packs or not. It could be they are not experts at authenticating vintage wax

This was my first thought. The $3000 price drop leads me to think this is exactly what happened.

If that were the case, the price should be dropped to about $300...the value of an opened display box, 36 wrappers and 360 NM to NM-MT commons.
That may be overly optimistic...I once opened a 1973 baseball pack bought from eBay and the cards had pencil writing on them!
True that. I once opened a 1980 pack from one of our group breaks that had the checklist marked. Needless to say, we returned those packs!
Thanks for the info guys, I'm a little bummed, I was going to buy it. I've bought a few boxes from them in the past and they were fine but I guess the big price drop bothers me a little to much now. For the record, I have bought a lot of boxes from Steve and I really enjoy BBCE but I have many other boxes from other sources that aren't wrapped and I've never had any problems. Steve has great stuff but I feel like he sets the market on lot of stuff and in my opinion, some things are a bit too high. (example: 1989 Score Football) Anyway thanks again for the feedback. I'm passing on the 1976 box.

When spending that kind of dough, you're entitled to ask questions.
I would like to know why they're providing a 55% discount on the box?
If I were selling the box to BBCEx - even if purchased from them and selling back - I would've asked for more than 45 cents on a dollar.
I just guess the skeptic in me kicked in?
It's possible that they sent it to BBCE, and BBCE questioned it. So DA discounted the price since its authenticity is questioned. If you're interested, ask. If they can't be "bothered" by questions on a $4,000 item, then you have your answer.

Update: The box is now listed on Ebay. I asked a few questions about the box which they answered. I'm passing on the box.
Care to share the questions and answers?
I asked him why he didn't send to BBCE to sell for more $ and he didn't respond...
makes sense--more uninformed suckers---errrr-----people on the bay
I asked about the price reduction, condition of the box, and have they attempted to have it graded. They stated; the box is fine, we have not had it graded. Very brief answer but to be fair he answered my questions just very briefly. I want to be clear, I like D&A, I buy a lot of stuff from them, mostly modern and have zero problem with them. This is just a box I've wanted for a while and I loved the price but I'm just not comfortable with it. I hope someone buys it (it's a great price) has it graded and makes a nice profit.
Buy it off of eBay and have D&A ship it to BBCE. If it does not pass authentication file an eBay claim.
James
If I had the coin and desire for the box, I'd do exactly what James suggests.

Have always wanted a 1976 box since it was a key part of my youth. First year of little league, my Reds won their second WS in a row, and while I had cards from 1973-74-75 the 1976 season was the first year we collected in huge numbers. Having said that the nostalgia reasons aside it is a tough box to plunk down $6k for me in terms of getting value out of cracking the packs.
I agree with the sentiment of sending it to bbce and having them verify and certify it, and if it does not pass the test return it to D&A.
