I've been wanting an Oregon Trail Commemorative Half Dollar for a very long time. The problem had been, I just couldn't find one that spoke to me. I had alway's seen my self buying one already graded, with spectacular color. The problem was, either I couldn't afford it or I just didn't like it. Well this little devil showed up at my favorite local shop. It's not graded and it's pretty much blast white. Something @ricko can appreciate. :)

This one came in a white plastic holder, that I assume maybe a Capital Plastics Holder. It has a bunch of information printed on the plastic and it's covered by a protective plastic cover on both the back and front. There was just something about it that I really liked. Maybe it's just not something you see everyday. Anyway it has a new home and I finally have an Oregon Trail Half Dollar. The next commemorative on my want list is a Texas.

The holder looks like it may have been prepared for an exhibit at a large convention, such as the ANA summer convention. Custom made Capital Plastics holders like that are always interesting and that one is no exception.

I like the idea that the holder was made for an exhibit.

Too bad it has the reverse as the obverse. I have fought that fight for 40+ years and it will never be resolved.

Thank you all for your great comments. I'm very happy with this example. It's well struck, I've seen a few a few that have had weak strikes with flat arms and legs. The presentation holder I think is what really sealed it for me.

As far as the reverse/obverse, I've seem them mounted in holders in different ways. But it is funny that the holder mentions the reverse as the obverse and vice versa.

It feels fitting, since I live in the area at the end of the Oregon Trail. :)

I should probably buy a Vancouver as well, since I live in Vancouver.

Went through The Numismatist online and found the news release on the Oregon Trail in the Nov. 1926 issue. The wagon side is identified as the obverse, and the photos have the wagon side on the left.

I looked it up in the Mint Reports once and the first mention of it gave the wagon side as the obverse.

Fixed. ;) Unfortunately I cannot change the text printed on the holder. :)

Now my photography OCD is bugging me. LOL The subjects are facing out towards the edges of the frame rather than towards the center. :p

I know. However, that is correct. I am sure (without any documentation) that what happened was that somebody thought it would be "cute" to put the Native American in front of the wagon, not knowing or caring that the left picture was normally the obverse.

I have to go and check my Family tree. It's alway's possible. I've been wondering that myself.

Thanks, I'm really happy with it. I hope the feeling stays that way. I have had feelings change over time, but not too often.
