Couple years ago I put this TONED MERC on the BST for ~$50 when it was raw. Now it is graded...

I pulled this coin out of a crusty old album at a flea market a few years back and thought it was pretty cool. I may have paid about $20 for it. Based on the retail PCGS price guide (now PCGS MS66) and considering the cost to ship, grade, True View etc...it is now about right....plus a color premium. People probably thought the obverse line was a scratch, even though I said it wasn't or didn't like it for some other reason. Anyway, it never sold. For comparison, you can see the PCGS True View and also my photo of the coin. All in all, I think the photos are pretty equal except for one thing, PCGS nailed it by capturing the luster in their images, taking it over the top. I could not be happier with the photos they took. Well done, PCGS!

$50 seems fair. Someone will bite.
Coin is not doing much for me. Your image was very good. Even though it is not a scratch, it looks like one and is distracting.
Yeah, I like most toners but this coin doesn't appeal to me.
Very nice, congrats on your submission results !
Your obverse has more pop, and their reverse does. I think the combination of the two photo sets would be nice.![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Nice pictures.... I know you say that is not a scratch, but what is it? Sure looks like a scratch....Cheers, RickO
My guess is that something came in contact with the toning, across the coin, enough to mess with the toning but not enough to scratch the coin. I looked at it closely with a 20x prior to sending it in. I would call this a toning interruption. Lol. Could be an envelope, other piece of paper, clothing or a million other things that caused it? If you look at the full sized True View, it is pretty clear that it is not a scratch and no metal is moved anywhere.

Sorry to say but that toning yields negative eye appeal.
I would not have even paid $20 for that raw.
If you like the coin and you didn't pay much for it, that's all that matters. When it comes to figuring out what a more expensive toned coin is worth, either the coin is universally considered to have attractive toning, or it is best avoided.
