Are Buffalo nickels too small?

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭

Not a poll, but I vote yes.
Such a puurrdeee design and such a leetle coin. :'(

A Buffalo HALF would have been perfect. Yes, even at the cost of no Walkers.

So let it be written; so let it be ignored. :D

(and no, the buffalo dollar and rounds don't do it.) :p

Same size as a Jefferson nickel, so no- not too small.
And, if need be, get the large silver round Buffalo the mint put out a few years ago.

If they had made a Buffalo HALF that would have been cool

You're treading dangerously with the Walker crowd. If you're gonna get in trouble with it, so will I.

I agree wholeheartedly! Can you imagine the beautiful strikes that would be around by rendering the coin in Silver?

    Gotta go. Heart palpitation time.

The 2008-W half-ounce $25 Buffalo gold might fit the bill.
(Bonus: You can collect it by date and by type at the same time.)

Since it is one of the great U.S. coin designs, I believe a larger coin would be attractive, just not at the expense of the Walking Liberty half... which is also one of the great designs. Cheers, RickO

What ya do is take a really big picture of it :) Buffalo nickels is my series. I fell in love with then when I was about fourteen years old I’m 66 now. I agree they are thee prettiest US coin ever minted. I wish they’d bring them back. Haven’t we had enough of the Jeffersons?

Don't assume that it would have looked the same in a larger size. The relief migjr have become an issue. The commen silver dollar they made using the designs did not look the same.

  • koynekwestkoynekwest Posts: 10,048 ✭✭✭✭✭

It would have been very nice to have had them struck in silver at least. You would have to eliminate one of the other classic designs to do that, tho.

Personally I like the nickel. It is a think and chunky design that fills the space. I think the thicker nickel (thickness vs diameter ratio) is more conducive to that.

  • AzurescensAzurescens Posts: 2,763 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think the nickel should be bigger. Big enough to not be a quarter, half, or dollar coin, which should all be reeded. Dimes the size of current nickels. It makes more sense to me idk why, like when handling or counting it would be easier. Especially if you were blind.

I'd accept a liberty obverse and a buffalo reverse, without all the die polishing problems. Even then I'm settling.. and I don't like to settle.

I for one would like to see the mint change the design of the silver Eagle to this

I think that’s a great idea! IF the buffalo nickel planchets were thicker I’m more than sure it would have filled out better on a regular basis. Still the way the design fills up the planchet is just amazing.

I think they did a good job, getting a solid obverse without being too much, and a wonderfully filled reverse with everything we would expect on a nickel. That specific design is.. awkward.. if larger than what it was made for.

The Buffalo Nickel design is perfect..........albeit as a medal. I love the coin, the Mint didn't. It is perfectly proportioned, fully displays both aspects obverse and reverse, but Fraser made the design a little crowded.

IN GOD WE TRUST was left off..........no room.

I imagine it could have been "smashed in" somewhere, it would not look right no matter where they put it.

The message the coin attempts to visually portray a time...a very special time.....when the Country was wide open and ready for all to see.

I think the Buffalo Nickel is as close to a perfect design as the Mint has ever produced. I love the ruggedness seen on the Var 1 and the very high relief on all coins in the series. The only fault I can find is the tiny, crowded nature of E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse. I'll second the statement above that it would look great on a silver bullion coin.

If they made them the size of trash can lids you couldn't fit them in your pocket. So big photos the size of trash can lids will have to do.

I can only imagine the joy of holding a pristine T1 Buffalo Half Dollar in my hand. I believe it would be the ultimate coin for me. C'mon Dan.

Walkers and Saints are OK. Or so I'm told.

I think a dual design-both Buffalo and Walking Lib for the silver Eagle would be a good idea as long as they remain true to the original Variety One design in it's entirety. I wish they would have done that with the Walking Liberty design.

The only fault I find with the design is that placement of "E. Pluribus Unum." It looks to be "stuck in" to meet a statutory requirement. As for making it larger, I think that the Buffalo commemorative dollar was pale rendition of the great design and amateurish looking.

The Gold Buffalo coin is much better, but I think that the design looks better in a smaller format. I regret that the Buffalo gold fractional were only struck for one year. They made for an interesting set, but the prices are too high for me for modern coins.

The best looking version of the Buffalo design is represented by a 1936 Satin Proof nickel that is in my collection.

Excluding obsolete half cents and large cents, nickels are the lowest face value per unit weight of US coins. So they are too big. Too much nickel for their value.

I think it would be an excellent idea to bring back the fractional Buffalos. This would make them affordable. I have the 2008 1/4 oz and it's just the right size. It's included in my set of Buff proofs and fits right in.

Half dime sized coins have never been popular. They are too hard to handle.

Bring back the WLH, Buffalo, Mercury, and SLQ designs. Rotate the designs among the denominations each year. Collect the set.

SLQ with full breast would've made a nice obverse for breast cancer awareness. 100 years later someone would still be offended.
