Won a key tonight

ad4400ad4400 Posts: 2,115 ✭✭✭✭✭

Always wondered how or when I would make the stretch on any of the last three dates needed to complete my liberty nickel set. That opportunity presented itself tonight for the 12-s. I suspect it will fit right in for what I am trying to build.

I’ve started the set in 2011, so I guess you could argue seven years.

The mintmark on your 12-S displays nicely. Congrats to you on your version of the first San Francisco Nickel coined.

Very nice coin! For a key date that isn't particularly rare, you owe it to yourself to find a coin that stands out from the run of the mill, and this one does. The strike is actually better than the details imply. The details remind me of most 1921-S Morgans, and given this was S's first go-around with this metal, it's not particularly surprising that their dies turned to mush right away. I imagine that a well-struck, needle-sharp 12-S is a major rarity.

    I agree, really nice coin.

"The entire production was struck in four days---December 24 and 26-28. On that last date, the first 1912 S nickel coined was used to pay the first fare on San Francisco's new Municipal Railway. The celebrated passenger was Mayor James Rolph, and the coin was presented to the city treasurer for preservation, but it disappeared from the treasurer's office many years ago.
Gems are rare for this issue, the number shown being perhaps higher than normal due to multiple submissions of the same coin. This is a frequent occurrence with key dates. The typical 1912 S nickel is softly struck in the hair above Liberty's forehead and at the lower left of the wreath. A fully struck example may not exist, as the obverse weakness seems to have been caused by an incomplete transfer from the hub."

Perhaps yours is the long-lost first coin...
