Like it or not I'm going to interject a little culture into this Forum. A day at the Getty
This will be an unpopular thread. Only kidding. My son and other family members met me in Vegas to watch and bet the Big Ten Basketball Tourney. We did well and our school Michigan captured its second consecutive title. Go Blue! Apparently we are now a basketball school ; (
To wash Vegas out of our hair we went to the Getty upon returning to my home in LA. For anyone who has never been you are doing yourself a disservice. It's multiple buildings and the very grounds are spectacular and free.
Now to make this thread numismatic related. Moses Mendelssohn was a great philosopher and is depicted on one of my favorite medals directly below. Felix Mendelssohn was his grandson and was a brilliant composer amongst other things. Bust below.
Moses......
Felix
The Getty had a great group of paintings from 18th century Europe. Amongst them was a portrait of James Christie. The originator of Christies Auction House established in 1766. It is the worlds largest auction house to this day. I've always liked this painting as it shows Christie leaning against one of the artists own landscapes.
This dude invented the flip...... "Flip" Belisarius. Only kidding. Just wanted to work this brilliant piece of art into this thread. The man/ General is Amazing
Some other views from the Getty.
My wife and me
And the boys whooping it up in Vegas. We were just offered the 10 best midgets on the planet. My nephew is 6’ 9 so almost everyone is a midget to him

Ah, "Phädon oder über die Unsterblichkeit der Seele." Should have named my dog "Phaedo" (pronounced "fido" in Latin).
Visited the Getty Roman Villa recreation at Malibu twice, long ago, which was built well before the new museum complex. Wonderful place. At that time, the second floor of the Villa was full of European art. Haven't been to Southern CA in over fifteen years, so haven't seen the new Museum complex. I do thank you for reminding me, I should put the new Getty Museum complex on my bucket list!
Nice. I especially like the cacti!
Thanks for posting this, Mark......I never have the Getty on my to do list in LA, but now it is at the top. The beach will have to wait.
And you have a remarkable resemblance to your AVATAR.
OINK
Great images... Thanks for sharing. Haven't been in about 30 years.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
You really are "just a common man" rather than the world traveler I had imagined. You are more handsome than that former beer guy too! BTW, just for the record, I'm straight.
As Bill pointed out the Getty Villa’s in Malibu ( you need a reservation) are also amazing. We could meet there and then to Zuma Beach and unto the Reel Inn for lunch.

Very cool. Love that museum. They started building on the hillside above the 405 when I was at UCLA in the late 80s, and we all wondered just what the @#!&? they were building up there every time we passed by, since it was under construction for almost a decade, I think. Worth the wait.
Love the post - thanks! Have very much enjoyed the Getty in prior visits.
Still trying to figure out what you mean by, "we were offered the best 10 midgets on the planet"....... is that legal??
How about some NW culture - just had the Andrew Wyeth exhibit here at the Seattle Art Museum - simply amazing! Was there opening night and the head of American Art from Christies (there's the connection) was there and all he could say was, "Wow", over and over again.
Yeah, I still travel 190 days Internationally a year but much prefer my own bed. The nice thing is that the other 160+ days I can work or play from pretty much wherever. It’s ok.
“Common” would actually be embellishing my humble upbringing. I have a great well balanced family and I’m blessed. Thank you

@Lakesammman outside the Cosmopolitan Hotel 10 midgets, $20 and a steak dinner were common fare
Great pics Tim! Thanks for sharing.
They are mesmerizing

Looks like a lot of fun Mark. Did you lay down big on your team?
We hit the Wolverines on the money line as dawgs against both Purdue and MSU. Also hit all four quarterfinal games betting against the teams with the double bye versus the spread. The table games weren't as kind.. We had the time of our lives

Where were you guys booking it in Vegas?
Those top of the building/garden/cacti pics immediately reminded me of the top our office/building in Mexico City.
thank you for the dip into culture but what is this LA you refer to.......up here in Maine, LA is Lewiston/Auburn
Great pictures and thread.... and a great start to my day.... Cheers, RickO
Thanks Mark, but wasn't the Big 10 Championship at MSG in NY?
@dimeman. It was at MSG. But we meet in Vegas to watch and bet the games as well as gamble , etc.
@DrBuster we stayed and bet at the Cosmopolitan. Never made it down to Westgate. Where in Mexico City? I work out of Santa Fe but I’m in Polanco, Roma and Condessa a lot

Cool photos.....
...... hmmm for culture, my family and I spent all day at Disneyland yesterday .....in 80 degree SoCal weather ........... that was a trip ......
Agreed - THAT ("The Mouse") would be my problem in LA too.
My wife could ride the 'It's a Small Small World" Ride twenty times in a row and not bat an eyelid. In fact, after the third ride 'round, she would be in some kind of a trance.
Fine Art can't compete with that kind of a high.
It's in Miguel Hidalgo. Was down there training some folks end of 2016.

See, I get my culture closer to home and my exposure to the classics on TV. While driving my wife to dinner I ask her "do you know what they call a quarter pounder in France"? She says "no". I answer smugly "a royal with cheese". Its then I spring it on her that I'm taking her to a French restaurant. She says "there isn't a French restaurant around here". I reply smugly "yea its called LA-McDonalds".

That is crazy. My son was hosting a visitor at the Getty very likely at the same time you were there. I asked him if he could see where the wildfires were threatenting the museum recently. He didn't recall seeing any burned areas in the vicinity, but then he wasn't looking for it either. Did you see any evidence of the burn?
By the way congratulations to your school. Ironically the only two places in the world that have a Carnegie Deli are Madison Square Gardens where the B1G tournament games were being played and at the Bellagio in Vegas, the city in which you were watching the game. (I remain curious how authentic the Vegas version is to the New York one with regard to their legend corned beef and/or pastrami sandwiches smothered in melted Swiss.)
Here, take a tour of the Smithsonian natural history place.
Cool link. (if it works)

After looking at that mug shot of the 4 of them, the burn evidence rule most certainly started in Vegas!
I live 5 miles northeast of the Getty. I’ve seen plenty of fire from my house unfortunately. You should have been able to see some burn areas from the northern most buildings by looking across the 405 and looking east toward Skirball.
That fire was insane

Mark,
Congrats on the Michigan B1G tourney victory. My boys from Wisconsin will be out of the Big Dance for the first time in either 19 or 20 campaigns I think. They had a good run, but no championships. Not getting one in the Kaminsky era wasn't good.
Cheers,
Jeff
A little culture yesterday as well..SF ballet for Frankenstein.
Very epic, but not a single coin reference that I could pick up on.
There was a locket though...could have been a love token or a box dollar??
