I would advise you NOT to buy the early commemorative half dollars in AU or less, unless it is a financial necessity. Usually, especially in this market, you won’t save enough money on the initial purchase price to justify buying the lower grade coin. Is it really worth it to save $20 or $30, or sometimes less on $200 purchase?
These coins were made for collectors, and only a few of them reached circulation. Off the top of my head the only two pieces that were released generally for circulation were the 1892-3 Columbian Half Dollars and the 1923 Monroe Half Dollars. Most of the others can be found worn, but it was either an unusual situation where they spent and circulated for a while, used as pocket pieces or worse of all, abused.
In many cases, the AU commemorative half dollars on “one-way purchases.” You can buy them for $X, but when it comes time to sell, you are going to less than $X in almost every case.
