Are many types too much of a good thing?

The US has been issuing many type coins as of late including the statehood quarters (56 types), America the Beautiful quarters (56 types), Presidential Dollars (20 circulation types through 2011) and now American Innovation Dollars (50 types).

India issued 14 different kinds of 10 rupee coins from 2009 and 2017 and now people in India refuse to accept the coins because they believe they are fake:

Can the same thing happen here?

I want to say no, but the clueless will always be around. When the Westward Journey nickels were newish a woman in line at Arby's in front of me was convinced they were fake and I suspect she thought she would be arrested for having them. They were already a year or two old at that point.

Our coins have so little intrinsic value most people don’t even look at them.

I believe the vast quantity of designs has numbed the general public that now relates to coins mainly by size... or by color, in the case of the prezzies and sacs...The only redeeming value I see is the YN's collecting the series....it seems to be fun for them and has them searching change....Cheers, RickO

What amazes me is that all the real estate on the reverse of the Kennedy half has not yet been appropriated for some politician's pet cause.

Google could make so much money writing algorithms for more specific coin image searching and grades. Buying a coin and Google suggests a grade for a nominal 2.50 fee per listing on ebay. Their work would far outweigh current platforms in a month.

Squint. If it looks similar, then the coins are of the same type. Not 'scientific' but very practical. :)

I've fallen in love with these. I've gotta get a Dansco or capital plastics. I got a.. couple.. more today for a steal (xf's and better 22-40 bucks and some 60-80s). I love when someone puts all their listing as drafts and start all at the same time. People get confused and have more decisions to make (unless they're just buying them all). Thankfully I have OCD and did all my math well ahead of time expecting it to go down that way. Over 150 coins posted in no particular order all ending within the time it took to post draft. I skipped the Morgans and VAMS and went for the throat on seated and bust.

As a type collector I used to know about all of the 200 + coins that went into a U.S. type set. Now there are so many of them, I don't even bother. I have kept up by buying the Proof sets. If it's not in the Proof set, I don't have it, and don't really care.
Yes, it is getting to be too much.

One of the principles you learn in economics is the law of diminishing returns. Interested consumers value the first unit of a good most highly. They might even value subsequent units just as highly or almost as much. As more and more units are offered them, the demand almost always goes down. That’s what’s happening with all of these new designs. They have become background noise.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
