Please help grade this Buffalo nickel! Should it be sent for grading?

1913 D Type 2 is a better date for the set. This is one that I think I have nailed down the grade, but I wanted to be sure. Im also trying to decide if its worth sending in. What are your thoughts? Sorry about my lousy photos, in advance!

Do you have larger images?
Used my phone, likely the best its going to get.
It appears to be a nice album coin. Don't waste your money on having it graded.
Agreed. It looks like a really terrific coin, but the price compression for this issue is pretty strong and I think you would sink a decent percentage of its value in the cost of certification.

Looks AU very nice coin. Look what once was considered to be a VF fifty years ago!
Why lose most of the value by spending $25+ to have it put in a plastic slab?
I think it’s a nice AU50 coin. I’d be happy to have it in my album if you want to sell it and buy a slabbed one.
My guess from the images is XF45, but it could well have a shot at AU50.
I would tend to agree with the others that it may not be economically feasible
to have it slabbed. There isn't a big price spread between XF and AU, so you would
not gain a lot by having this liner coin 'make' AU.
It may however make it more marketable.
I would try to sell it as-is, see what kind of offers you get, then perhaps consider submission.
That looks like a pretty choice AU to me, but not the greatest pics to go off of.

Slabbed XFs, which this is at least, go for just under $200. Depends on what you paid for it and what you plan to do with it.
Very funny and true! I think this is the original holder when it was purchased and it was from the '60s era. There is also a paper I have that came with the price!
Looks low AU to me....50/53 ish.
Since the photos are so small, I’ll err on the conservative side: XF45 shot AU50
Very hard from the photo but xf45 to au50 imo.
Only a general impression can be made from those pictures. As above, likely a low AU... Also likely not worth the investment to slab. Is it for an album or are you going to sell it? If selling, good pictures on the BST would likely be the best venue since I do not think that investing in grading would increase profit at all. Cheers, RickO
It would be a lot easier to give an opinion if the coin wasn't in the holder.
BHNC #203
the coin was in that holder a very long time, if any of the residue from the plastic is on the coin, it could come back damaged
Besides the dirt on the head (AU), IMO, the only thing on that coin MAY BE a little haze. It will conserve up quite nicely. As I posted above, very nice coin OP.
Agree with Insider2 - that holder is not made of PVC, and my assumption is that it is likely benign to that coin. It just has some original 'dirt' and patina on it.
Just a little honest dirt, no PVC.
I dunno, a 13-D type 2 in 50 is no slouch of a coin. If you got it for $100 or thereabouts, I could justify it.
The coin could go 55. There is definite wear, but not a whole lot. 13-D was a better struck coin, but yours shows a lot of high point detail.
It is a very nice looking, clean coin.
This coin would be a very nice example in a set of high grade Buffs.

I would go 55 on the grade. I’d try to sell raw first. If you get XFish type offers, say $165 ball park, then I’d say no need to slab.

I'll go with the flow and say AU55. Try to sell it raw.
I like the original holder. A plastic slab with a definitive grade would not add much. And you can sneek it out of the holder for restoration and photos if you like.
OINK
Be careful of the patina on the staples.
I just sold several AU50, 53 and 55(trying to obtain an AU58) to a major dealer and while not getting very high prices, I do not think they would have even sold anywhere near 50% of list without the plastic. The plastic often pays for itself if the coin is over $200 in value(selling value not list). Just my opinion.

To close the book on this thread - I bought the coin (along with a similar-looking 13D Type 1) and it looks great in my album. I grade it AU55 and absolutely original.
Sometimes, the coin sells itself. Thank you @erwindoc for the great transaction and for saving me the trouble of cracking it out!
A win-win for two great members!
