Storage boxes for the various TPG slabs.

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

One thing that has always amazed me is the way that certain industries and certain things in our lives get "standardized" and it tends to make everyone happy and life easier. One example that comes to mind is the toilet. Until recently it seems that all toilet manufacturers have reached agreement on where the flush handle should be: facing the toilet, it is at the upper left corner near the tank lid. Amazing!!!! No matter where I am and what time of day it is, even with my eyes closed, I can flush.

And then we get TPG coin capsules and storage boxes.

I accept that everyone wants to have a readily identifiable slab but it strikes me as the "new mousetrap" syndrome. Lately, in an attempt to thwart counterfeiting and encapsulate a wider variety of items the individual TPG's can't even be faithful to their own capsules. Just within my own modest collection I bet I would need upwards of 10 different 20 slab boxes to hold everything. That is to say I probably have at least 10 different height/width/thickness combinations encompassing the slabs that I have. That doesn't even take into account larger slabs for Exonumia larger than 41mm.

I remember when we all liked NGC boxes because they held PCGS and NGC slabs. Small ANACS and PCGS rattlers were a PITA nuisance, but they still fit sloppily into a PCGS or NGC box. The outlier we all complained about was the SEGS slab which never fit into anything. This has always been a problem for me but in recent years it's been getting worse and neither of the two big-boys seems interested in developing a storage box to accommodate the variety.

Which brings me to my point, 'cause there's always a point, right??

Is there a solution for storage that you can suggest?? Is the solution that a 20 coin storage box such as we have become accustomed to on the verge of obsolescence?? Would it be realistic to assume that these two TPG's plan on redesigning a 20 coin box, or is that a pipedream?? Would it be feasible for some outside manufacturer to offer a product or is the market too small??

Currently, I use the NGC boxes as much as I can and a PCGS box when I only need to store PCGS coins. I have several of the red Intercept Shield double row boxes for the SDB but those aren't practical when full, it's too hard to get the coins in/out.

Thanks for your attention and any forthcoming suggestions/comments.

Al H.

I have gone back to the “old time” cardboard boxes they all fit. Now what to do with the blue boxes?

I recently purchased a few of the aluminum coin storage boxes you see floating around on eBay. They are made with foam inserts that hold any kind of slab because it’s squishable. While they’re more expensive than plastic boxes, the added expense is worth it, in my opinion. Here is an example (chosen at random, I’m not affiliated or reccomending the seller) https://www.ebay.com/itm/Aluminum-Storage-Display-Box-Case-Holds-20-PCGS-NGC-ANACS-Coin-Holders-Slabs/291353444280?hash=item43d604bfb8:g:rQYAAOSwDNdVmxOR

I agree with you Al, this whole storage box issue is a huge mess.

I used to store everything in NGC boxes or the Intercept track boxes. The Intercept boxes didn't accept the NGC fatty holders but i could get them in on an angle but lost a slot. PCGS fit fine in both.

But PCGS changed their holder recently, and those will not fit in the NGC boxes as they are too thick - they only fit PCGS boxes and the IS track boxes.

Someone ought to design a standard box that everything fits in (I can live with rattlers and old Anacs holders not fitting well).
I'd buy a dozen or so for the bank vault and what I take to shows.

I'd buy a 3D printer to make my boxes - just need the design. Then we can forget about the box mess.

    I'm with you too.

Love the NGC boxes and used them exclusively for all slabs until like you say the newer PCGS slabs came along. Would be nice to someday again have a one box fit all.

The old teletrade boxes work great. They hold all the different slabs.

I use the below Intercept Shield boxes. Everything fits nicely.

But our toilets are inconsistent. Three flush via plunger buttons in the middle of the tank lid. The other three use regular upper left handles. I thought you'd want to know.

I have a bunch of these,,,,,, just wad some paper up and put it in the end to hold everything snugly.

Even better..."The new version of this box includes a few changes such as color (now glossy white instead of red), lower side walls for easier access to coins and a stopper to hold coins in place for those times when the box is less than full."

    The stopper is pretty nice.

I did, keets. Are you referring to your difficulty removing coins when it's full? Note that the newer boxes have cut sides that make it painless.

I got the stoppers with mine as well but I still use paper as the weight of the slabs will push the stopper if you lift it at an angle such as putting in or out a safety deposit box.

NGC has a new box with wider slots. Would that work?

thanks for the link, BG. how in the world has this gone overlooked and not mentioned here for almost a year??

It's doesn't bother me to have different boxes for different slabs. Adds some color and I like mine separated by grading services anyway.

The answer is, a box with movable inserts..... that way, one box could store multiple size slabs in separate rows...probably not enough of a market to develop, but speaking from a developmental viewpoint, it would be fairly simple. I agree with your point Al... and that Columbian is gorgeous... Wanted to give you a 'like' as well but can only choose one.....Cheers, RickO

I don't like the plastic boxes usually; I use cardboard boxes, no frills, light, work with all slabs.

This is my solution. Preface by saying no kickbacks from Intercept, Wizard, or Coin Armour. I wish, but sadly, this is an uncompensated opinion  which reminds me I need to place an order...

The box is designed for baseball cards and is a bit longer/wider than the classic box of 20. IIRC it holds 28 slabs. It's wider so you can get your fingers around the slabs, though they jiggle a bit if it's less than full which is less than ideal.

My slabs are either in Coin Armour baggies which then make the slabs wide enough to not jiggle and easy to extract and/or are in the single slab holders of which IIRC 25 will fit with these (with careful squishing you can fit a slab in a baggie inside the individual holder).

The single holders inside make for a snugger fit and extracting the slabs a bit more difficult (unlike the double row one slab that has the side cuts--I actually do have one of those in my SDB, it fits fine with room for other items).

    The box--

Sorry, Grandam, but those red boxes without dividers end up scratching the surfaces of the slabs. Storage is a real problem, especially if you have safe deposit boxes which offer limited storage space.

FWIW, SEGS slabs fit fine in my PCGS blue boxes. If it wasn't for the label at the top, it would be hard to distinguish the holders from PCGS. My NGC holders and my old PCIs are too tall to close the lid.

 Whoops! I missed that part, I saw a price tag when I clicked a link. Well, the sports card one works for me, no tracks, but I like that given I use the single slab boxes and/or baggies. If some Intercept is good, more must be better right!

I had to bring out my old Teletrade Storage boxes I had in the closet for years. They can hold any gen of slab.

I will try those NGC mentioned above. Somebody had to come out with a asap storage box for all - if they do they will make a lot of money.

Old anacs and rattlers work in pcgs blue boxes if you fold a 2 1/2" flip around them and put them in the slot with the flip fold at the bottom.

I put my slabs in Ultra-PRO Card Sleeves, clear Polypropylene, acid free, no PVC. I get 100 for $1.25 at a local card shop. I can store then in the red boxes or in card boxes without worrying about scratching the slab if they rub together.
