New World War I Commemorative Dollar and Medals

I just opened the email I received from the mint about the World War I dollar program. It appears that there is series of five silver medals (probably struck on $1 planchets) to go with it. The trouble seems like you have to buy all of the medals in two piece sets with the commemorative silver dollar. That means you have buy four excess commemorative dollars if you will want all of the medals.

What is the mint thinking? Wouldn't make more sense to offer a six piece dollar and medals set? That does not seem to be an option.

As an aside, I don't find this commemorative coin to be very attractive. The obverse looks like a character from the classic movie, "All Quiet on the Western Front," and the flowers on the reverse re-enforce that theme.

To me World War I represented the ultimate failure of diplomacy. A lot of old men made serious mistakes in agreeing to a series of interlocking defense treaties that got a lot of young men killed and maimed, in the end for nothing. A most unfortunate bi-product of that war was the Bolshevik Revolution. They when mostly these same old men made the peace, they sowed the seeds for the next war with vengeful penalties and reparations. That war is not one that I find particularly suited for commemoration.

For those interested in WWI, the better play is the actual art medals from the time. There are some exceptional French medals that were produced in the 1914 to 1918 time frame that are inexpensive for what they are.

I was wonder what the qty will be by the time the mint gets to the last few. It says limited to 350,000 across all. So if they sell 150,000 (don't laugh) on the first 2 issues, what about the rest. I think the Marine one will sell the most but it will be interesting to see.

I have as much a right to express my opinions you do yours.

I did no more than express the frustrations with World I that was the theme of "All Quite on the Western Front" and numerus histories that have been written about that war. World War I was a human tragedy because it really solved no problems, except, perhaps, for the fact that it brought down Kaiser Wilhelm. Otherwise it created many other problems that have continued into the 20th century and beyond.

350,000 is for the silver dollars. The medals have a total mintage limit of 100,000 spread across the 5 medals.

On the Mint web site I see the 2 piece sets are all on backorder. I don't find the dollar particularly attractive, either.

They have been on backorder since day one since they won't ship until late May
